Hello,

Does anyone know whether spotting before a period affects leutal phase.

My leutal phase is normally 12 days but I always have spotting 2\3 days before. Does this mean my leutal phase is 9\10 days and something to be concerned about?

Thanks for reading x

It usually means low progesterone levels or a sudden surge of estrogen during the luteal phase. Bleeding is supposed to start when progesterone drops off after no egg is fertilized. This happens ideally around 14 dpo but for some women progesterone declines earlier or never gets going well enough and spotting happens earlier that we'd like.

Do you chart so you can see if there is a temp shift associated with your spotting? A low dip can confirm hormone levels changing which on a good cycle can be implantation bleed but also could be progesterone fading early. If it's Ib or sudden estrogen surge a second rise can occur...if it's progesterone tapering off early your bbt will generally not recover and stay low.

Hi pandi - thanks for the info. I have had a look at my last chart and I did have a dip at 11dpo and then it stayed low till AF arrived. So it sounds like it is low progesterone .

Do you know if there are any natural ways to increase progesterone? I have read the raspberry leaf tea is supposed to be good. I don't really want to take any tablets at this stage

Sorry to gate crash your thread op, just reading. Pandi - can I pick your brain, you are so knowledgable!! I had a mmc at 12 weeks in January and since then I have a short lp of 8-10 days. My temp isn't erratic in the tww tho and doesn't seem particularly low. Does that mean my issue might not be low progesterone?

It's so hard to get help in the uk when you've been trying 5 months even if you know there's an issue, xx

First ask to get your progesterone levels checked after O. Normal is 5-20, which is a huge range, so if it's under 10, get a little pushy with your doctor about what you can do to help boost it up. He/she may prescribe progesterone which is more going to be more fast acting vs chasteberry or progesterone cream.

Hey c beary and Mrs W...as tiger suggested if you can get your doctor to confirm your progesterone effectively after O then that is a good starting point. Just be aware that a one time blood test isn't as accurate as what doctors used to believe and sometimes a few progesterone levels are needed to get a true feel for your levels. Progesterone levels can fluctuate SO much depending on the time of day and even after eating levels decline 50%! They are reevaluating how they check progesterone levels with fertility specialist here in the US anyway (this according to my reproductive endocrinologist) to try to get more accurate snapshot of possible issues in women so they can take the right steps to correct them.

Mrs W if your lp is 8-10 days even with stable temps it reduces your odds of the egg getting a fair shot at implanting before the lining sheds for sure. Women can get pregnant with an 8-10 day lp but since implantation happens on average 8-10 dpo and takes a couple of days (it isn't instantaneous) you can see where your chances aren't as good. I am not a doctor but when a doctor is looking to lengthen your lp they do usually seem to prescribe progesterone as long as you are ovulating and everything else seems in order.

I did take the natural path (vitex and progesterone cream) after consulting with my doctor but would have gone the medication route had I not had success. There's nothing wrong with medicating I just wanted a long term solution to my cycle issues and not just a fertility fix to get pregnant and then end up at square one again. I've said it before in my post but it's a shame to me that infertility is viewed only as an obstacle on the way to a family. There are long term adverse health issues women face when hormones are imbalanced enough to cause these issues and finding a long term way to balance our bodies is a good idea for general health as well as getting pregnant imo. Good luck gals and feel free to pm me if you have any questions

I think I have low progesterone too as I always spot 1-2 days before AF is due and she only stays for 2 days!

Started charting this cycle so your posts are really helpful! Thanks!

If it is that where do you but progesterone cream from and how is it used?

Xx

I used Progest by Emirta which I bought off Amazon as it was the best price I found at the time. They recommend a dime size dollup twice a day in different areas of the body each time (rotate where you apply so it absorbs more evenly). Good luck!
