My birth didn't go according to plan at all, but its still positive!!
I had initially planned for a drug free, natural hospital birth. In my plan I had asked for no IV, no epi, gas and air/hot water pain relief, for DH to cut the cord and immediate skin to skin.
June 4th - 730am, I was put into hospital to be induced via Cervidil. I had started to have light contractions before we got there but nothing much. I was 2cm dilated. Cervidil was inserted, and I instantly started to get period cramping, but I couldn't tell the difference between a contraction and a cramp. I was told some cramping inbetween contractions was normal. I had to stay lying down for 2 hours after insertion. When the 2 hours were up, I asked to stay cause I really didn't feel great. My cramps were pretty bad and I couldn't tell what as a contraction vs a cramp. They said no as it was very normal to cramp, and I was sent home. About 15 min after getting home I was in excruciating pain. I was screaming in my bed, and all I could think of was that this wasn't normal and I was ready to just rip out the Cervadil insert. I called L&D back, and the nurse listened to me moan/scream, and my husband told her my stomach wasn't loosening back up. She asked us to come back in.
It took us about 10 min to get a cab, and I was moaning and crying in the cab all the way there (about 20 min) and when we got to the hospital I could barely walk into the assesment unit. They rushed me onto a bed and hooked me up, I couldn't keep quiet and im usually someone who can be in pain in silence. I felt so bad cause other women were there, I probably scared them all half to death. Within 15 minutes of being in assessment, I had one horrific pain and then a pop, my waters popped! I actually screamed MY WATER BROKE MY WATER BROKE.. which I didn't mean too, it was more excitement/severe pain DH grabbed a nurse, and she checked and yep! Time to head into a delivery room. She gave me the biggest pad I had ever seen, and within seconds of standing up I had soaked it. I looked onto the floor (I was shocked at how much water was actually coming out lol) and it was yellow and brown. I pointed to the nurse and just said "that's not right" and she asked us to walk down with her to my new room where I would deliver. I had to waddle with a towel between my legs! Once I got into the room I could barely stand. It got really scary at this point as I knew the pain I was in was not normal, and I knew baby had pooped already. They put me on the toilet where my waters continued to gush, and they were so thick it looked like I was pooping myself. It was black, green and yellow. I also had my bloody show. I had about 10 people come into the bathroom (while I was moaning and swearing and crying) and tell my husband that my uterus was so over stimulated that I was having literally one massive contraction. There was no break in between, my uterus wasn't releasing. No wonder! I asked what on earth was going to happen and they told me they needed to get my uterus to start contracting properly, and we needed to make sure baby wasnt distressed from the meconium in my waters and my uterus. We got me into a bed and decided at that point and epidural was best. They told me it would take a while as the guy who did it was busy, but then I saw about 5 nurses go out and I heard them saying they needed one and it was an emergency. It all kinda became a blur at this point but I had my IV inserted, epidural placed and pads put on as my waters were still coming out super thick and brown. I was contracting all through the epi and I had to have a nurse and Matt hold me. The epidural didn't hurt at all, just felt weird! Although at that point, nothing would have hurt compared to what I was going through.
Once I was all settled the epidural kicked in, and it was the best feeling ever. It worked - my contractions became regular at 3 min apart. I was checked and was at 4cm. They had turned it up all the way to help my uterus but told me that before pushing they could turn it down so I could feel when to push. We had to have baby monitored as her heart rate was dropping and not showing variation as it needed (going up and down) so I was put on an oxygen mask and they started to discuss C-section. I was so scared, but I would have done it if needed. Luckily over some time, she really started improving. I couldn't drink or eat at this time though as a precaution, so I had these little sponges on sticks that would keep my mouth from getting so dry.
After hours of nothing really interesting (other than being monitored which was scary, and another cervical check that said 5cm) they noticed my temperature was raising pretty high, so I was started on antibiotics which again, caused baby's heart rate to slowly rise. I was checked again and had already hit 10cm. It was 820pm!
I started pushing, which was pretty relaxed but we were very worried about her heart rate as it was dropping again with every push. I ended up switching to my side and pushing which helped. At about 10pm, I had my doctor, 2 nurses, my nurse who had been with me the entire time and the NICU team show up. My doctor prepared me by telling me that cause of the potential distress with baby, the NICU team was here and would need to check her out right away in our room, so DH couldn't cut the cord and I couldn't get immediate skin to skin or delayed clamping. That was fine, I didn't care as long as she as okay. At 10:11pm, after 2 hours of pushing (rotating between side pushing and back pushing) Lily-Grace was born! She screamed right away and then stopped, and was rushed over to the NICU nurses who had her screaming again in a second. I kept asking if she was okay and she was My placenta was delivered naturally (which felt so weird) and it was severely infected. I was handed Lily for skin to skin, who was so interested in everything and didn't cry much at all! I was worried about it but they said she was just quiet They had to take her away for testing though as she had a bad rash, and they were concerned about the placenta. I was so upset to let her go, but DH went with her. I had only a minor first degree tear with a few stitches, my doctor was very impressed
We both had to stay an extra day as we needed IV antibiotics, her rash turned out to just be a newborn rash. She is now home and thriving! We had a nurse come by today and everything is great, and im healing okay minus huge hemmoroids. That came from pushing so hard and fast near the end when my contraction slowed and we needed her out asap.
Even though I had the most opposite birth story from what I wanted, I really am not sad about it. I was so worried about the health of Lily-Grace I was willing to do anything. I am happy with the choices I made, they protected my baby and I.
