My 5 wo has a blister on his upper lip. Is it quite a common thing? It doesn't bother him or affect feeding. The skin is peeling a little bit. Is it usually just caused by vigorous sucking? Lol I know he's a very vigorous sucker from my 4 week experience of breast feeding before switching to formula.

Yep, it's very common. I've been told it can sometimes be an indicator of a poor latch (due to lip tie, tongue tie, etc.). My daughter has a lip tie and she had a blister on her top lip for probably months. But I also think it's just generally really common because they are feeding so often when they're little.
