I'm holding my baby right now while she's sleeping and a minute ago she just randomly started choking :( she was silent while choking and then let out a loud noise and seemed okay after. But I burped her for a minute just in case. Now I'm freaking out thinking about what might have happened if I had been asleep. Especially because this is the second time this week that she's choked like this, except last time it was while I was burping her so I had thought it was bc she might've started to spit up but it went back down or something. Does anyone know if this is serious or not? I'm afraid to go to sleep now..

My LO has reflux and does this. Sometimes she spits up a little though her nose. They will turn the head if they start to spit up, but it often goes back down. You can try raising the head of whatever she's sleeping in, though. It does sound quite frightening the first few times!

I agree reflux. We have to hold our LO upright while she sleeps for about 45 minutes before laying her down. Because she will wake back up, spit up and cough and start sounding very congested from it if we dont.

So if she chokes or spits up she'll clear it on her own even if she's on her back?

This used to happen alot to my lo during the first couple of weeks of his life. My heart would literally stop! It is frightening but I think its normal..my HV said it was the mucus at the back of the throat. He never actually choked btw, just gagged..

My LO slept in a rock n play on her side for the first 2 months because I was worried she would choke. It was inclined which helped her greatly. This is what i have.

I'm actually planning to go buy that later today :) I've heard great things about it.

I don't want to scare you, but my one baby couldn't clear it on her own. She stopped breathing. Fortunately, she was on the angelcare breathing monitor, which alerted me. It happened numerous times between 2 and 4 months of age thereafter. The dr said that she probably would not have lived through the episodes without the angelcare. She always slept on her back. We found out it was due to silent reflux when she was 18 months old. My other babies all slept on their sides. My current (4th) baby also makes that horrible sounds, and choke numerous times every day. I feel so sorry for her. She also sleeps on the angelcare, but hasn't stopped breathing even once, and she's almost 4 months old.

holy moly bluehadeda! Bet your glad you had the angelcare! I have it too and just yesterday started to use it as she is always in the same room as me. I was constantly checking her when she was quiet in case something had happened.

But yes my LO one does this too, she sounds very congested when lying down and i try to keep her upright for as long as possible after feeds. I do hope she outgrows it soon :(

You have NO idea how glad I were! That's why I'm a huge advocate for using the angelcare. Not just for peace of mind, but because it actually, really, saved my baby's life. We were so paranoid after that, that she slept on it until she was 4.5 years old. Even though the last time the alarm triggered was when she wasn't 2 yet. She's now 9, and I still check on her a couple of times every night before I go to bed.

My lo did this while we were in hospital, the staff said a lot of c section babies do it due to not passing through the birth canal so the mucous etc doesnt clear as well as it can do. SHe also did it not long after and still has up til a month or so ago and it was due to her reflux.

xx

Someone bought that for us but we returned it cause I thought it'd make me paranoid. Now I'm really regetting that. That thing was expensive. Damnit..

I used to worry about this and was always asking the health visitor. She assured me that apparently no babies have died from spitting up or choking while sleeping! Apparently they 'just dont' says the hv..
Now im worried again!
