Looking for advice... Next Steps: RE consult IVF vs Injectables.

Like so many others, I can't believe I am writing down IVF as a next step. Needless to say, I am scared.

Bio: my DH and I have been TTC for 17 cycles and have never seen a BFP. We are in the unexplained IF group. We are currently on our 3rd and last round of Clomid and IUI (1dpiui). I was on 100mg for the 1st cycle, with two mature follies, and 150mg (to get more follies) for round 2 and 3 but only had 2 follies for round 2 and 1 for round 3 (depressing!). Tomorrow, we have our RE appt to discuses our next steps. We already talked on the phone and she said: because you are small and young (I am 30 so I guess that is young) she doesn't want to do injectables and IUI due to the chance of multiples. She is suggesting IVF but wants to sit down and review all the facts and answer questions.

There are so many people on this site who have gone through IVF. What questions did you wish you asked before you started? What questions do you recommend I ask tomorrow? Any advice would be much appreciated!

I am hoping that we don't end up at the point that you are honestly.. This is our first try of Clomid and IUI and we get 3 tries of that. I just want to say that I've seen sooooo many women who actually got preggo on the FOURTH IUI .. so I think for us- if it doesn't work for the 3- I am going to push my doc to try JUST one more time and use injectables as well. IVF is insanely expensive.. and I will state that concern to my doctor. My good friend had this exact same thing happen to her- and it was the 4th try AND injectables that worked and she is due in 2 months with twins. Sure, there is increased chance of twins- but that is the case with Clomid period- and I know for myself- I'd want to risk having twins over jumping to IVF. I am totally rooting for you that your IUI works this cycle so you don't even need to go there.. but it IS your body and it IS somewhat up to you ~ especially seeing you are in the US as well. I hope some other ladies can answer some of your questions~ they are ones I may need later on down the line too.

Just make sure you go into the appt with questions in hand! We got the full gammit at our first appt with our FS. So we knew the odds of Clomid/IUI or Injectables/IUI or IVF... obviously we are starting with Clomid/IUI. But if that doesn't work- then I'd for sure maybe at least try 1-2 rounds of injectables before IVF... mostly for the cost, but it's also way more invasive with IVF. BUT- it's a #'s game as well. We were told Injectables w/IUI only carry about a 5% better chance at conception than Clomid w/IUI. Might vary by clinic though? But sometimes that 5% is all you need!

Also, is there any way they would do just one more round of IUI (if needed?)- my FS said they do 4 rounds... then it's on to the next step. And my friends SIL got prego on her 4th round... sometimes it's just that last try that works????

Hope you don't need to think about any of this though... and you get your BFP!!!!!
