about two weeks ago I posted here that I had low amnio fluid at my 19 weeks scan...

I have since had another scan at Nottingham Feto Maternal Medicine unit. They couldn't find anything wrong with the baby and said all looked okay.

However, my fluid was still very low at 7cm total Amnio Fluid Index... which is still considered low - below 5cm is classed as crucial.

I have now been reading that babys with down syndrome have been found in low Amnio Fluid... this is worrying me to death now.... my husband brother was down syndrome and he died aged 4 years, but our AFP tests at 16 weeks came back as 1 in 380. Not considered high.

So now I don't know what to do... they are not scanning me again until nearly 25 weeks... but I'm not sure whether to ask for the tests anyway to see if there are any other abnormalities... I don't believe Downs can be picked up on Ultrasound??

I am so scared and worried.

:hugs: Fingers crossed that everything is ok for you hunny

I haven't had the tests so I can't really offer any advice on that side of things but I will be thinking of you and your little princess

*hugs* sorry ur going througha tough time.
But keep ur chin up and im sure everything will be fine. U have to keep strong for ur LO
xx

Try not to worry too much, the doctor would have re scanned you earlier if he was worried about the amniotic fluid. Mine is 6cm and 7cm, and my consultant seems fine with this. And downs syndrome can be picked up on ultrasound with markers like femur length and if you had a nuchal scan at 11-14 weeks they would have a good indication that the baby has downs or not. xxx

Doctors/midwives tend to be very negative about such things. They are giving you all scenarios, including worst case, so try not to get too worried. I have virtually no to zero fluid around one of my twins due to a membrane rupture (it varies, but is never measurable) and although statistically the odds for baby aren't good, I do know of other ladies who were told the same and their babies had normal lungs/limbs at birth.

Is there anyway you could be leaking fluid? Have they checked you for this?

SCans can't detect Downs, no. But babies with Downs do usually have some sort of abnormalities or features associated with Downs and these can be picked upon a scan. That said, my son has Downs (blood test was low risk, very!) and nothing was picked up on routine scans.

I was induced with my daughter due to low fluid. In the last few weeks i was in hospital for the last month and in the end induced at 38 weeks. I had a pool of 2.5cm and one of 1.5cm of fluid so a total of 4cm. She never really moved in my tummy. When she came out she was small and has had many chest infections which i was told could be from low fluid because they need the fluid for there lungs to mature but apart from that shes a bright and healthy 4 year old. We knew she had no genetic abnomolies because we had a CVS test at 13 weeks.

Oh and fluid can replenish, mine didnt but ive heard of people having low fluid and then normal again. I would relax and do what you have to. If you feel you need other tests to put your mind at ease then i would. I know alot of people dont opt for invasive tests but i did and am glad, we have patau syndrome that runs in the family and weve already seen the devistation it causes. An ultrasound wont tell you 100% if the bub has downs syndrome but it can look for markers like nasel bone and internal organs etc. Good luck. x

I hope everything is ok hun.. TRY not to worry too much ( easier said than done I know ) but Im sure your little one will be fine xxx

wishing you all the best and fingers crossed for fluid build up at the next scan :)
