I've recently been diagnosed with gestational diabetes and started monitoring my blood sugars yesterday. My reading before lunch today was 2.9 which seems scarily low - but I haven't been given any info about low readings and what to do about them yet. Has anyone else had similarly low readings yet? What should I do to prevent them?

Are you on any medication?
Ideally your readings should be between 5 - 7.
Check regularly, especially if you feel wierd - dizzy or completely not with it. Eat a sandwich or other carbs as they act quicker.

Are you on insulin or other medication. Normally that what causes low blood sugar. I am type 1 diabetic and low blood sugar are common to me as I use insulin. The only thing you can do is eat 10-15g of quick acting carb, so juice, non diet soft drink, lucozade... The small can of soft drinks are the exact size you need. I always carry one with me. And as soon as you can. If you go too low you can loose counciousness (I never have and have been as low as 1.6) but you don't want to risk it. After you are a more normal level eat some more long acting carb so you don't go back low. And normal levels during pregnancy are between 3.5 and 5.5 before eating.

Thanks. I'm not on insulin or any medication - only started doing readings on Tues for first time so was a bit worried yesterday. Today's readings have seemed more normal - and nothing's been high which is good. Seeing Dr tomorrow so will ask him about my readings.

Are you taking Raspberry Leaf Tea? This can reduce blood sugar.

No, not having any raspberry leaf tea. I'm really not sure what the reason for the low sugars are - had a bigger breakfast and bigger lunchtime snack today and my before lunch reading was 3.0. Saw my GP tonight and he was surprised by my GD diagnosis when my highest blood sugar reading has been 6.1 (and I've been eating more carbs than I was advised to). Back at hospital for a check up with diabetes team on Monday so will see what they have to say then.

Could your monitor be up the blink?? did you feel poorly?

I have felt tired and hungry - the time I got the 2.9 I felt rough. One of the features of my pregnancy has been sickness returning and feeling bad if I get hungry - so have been carrying food round in my handbag for the last few months. Only time when snacking is difficult is at work, esp in mornings, as I'm an infant school teacher and can't really sit in front of the kids and eat.

Thank you.

Had my appointment today and was basically told that as I'm not on insulin the diabetes nurse and midwife aren't interested in the low readings and that I shouldn't worry about them. Wasn't really reassured by that, but guess I'm just going to have to see what my readings do this week.
