Hi all,

Has anyone else been told at the 19-20 week scan they have a low placenta?

Has anyone gone on to the 34 week scan to find it had moved up, or had placenta previa and needed a caesarean?

Just been told mine is 16mm away from cervix when it needs to be 2.5mm. Im worried about preterm delivery.

I think most move up but just wondering what I might be in for...

Thanks
Abby

Hi,

Mine was touching cervix at my 20 week scan, they re-scan me in 3 weeks (34) to see if it's moved. I've read 90% move by 3rd trimester, mine is posterior which is less likely to move as the anterior makes the most growth but I've had no bleeding so far so imagine mine may have moved.

I want a section anyway so I'm not too worried about it but I was worried about bleeding and having to stay in hospital, which can happen, as I have a 2 yr old and couldn't bear the thought of not being at home for her. I think it's when the placenta covers cervix more likely to bleed but you have to be mindful if close by.

I've been much more uncomfortable with baby position and wondered if my placenta position was affecting that but probably in my head, good luck with the rest of your pregnancy x

Thanks Inka,

Fingers crossed for your next scan but but at least you've got to 31 weeks with no bleed and long hospitalisation, which I agree would be awful!!

My placenta is over lapping the cervix at my 19week 2days scan. I already had a growth scan booked for 28weeks as my consulant is concerned about babys size and it is now in my notes to check on the placenta at the scan xx i have not had any bleeding or spotting this pregnancy however my placenta is anterior and more likely to move i also havent felt baby kick from the outside yet only on the inside xx

I had a low lying placenta at 20 weeks; it had moved completely by 34 weeks
I was told that most do!
:hugs:

I had placenta previa at my 20 week scan (anterior), had a private scan at 24 weeks and she said it had moved and was anterior but the OS was clear. I have an NHS scan next Tuesday to see where it is, I feel alot of movements which I didnt have with my son and I had an anterior placenta with him so wouldnt be suprised if I still have previa.

I was diagnosed with placenta previa when I had my ultrasound at 21 weeks. I was put on pelvic rest. They are going to do another ultrasound around 28 weeks to see if it has moved. I really hope that it does. I had a c-section with my DS and really didn't want another one. I would also like to be off pelvic rest. I will do whatever it takes though to have a healthy baby.

I had a low placenta at 20 and 23 weeks, in fact one scan showed it was touching the OS. By my next scan at 25 weeks, just 2 weeks later (I've had quite a few extra scans!) it wasn't low anymore

I was told that in most cases it moves away from the cervix as your uterus wall stretches. I'm sure they'll keep a good eye on you and give you all the info and appropriate options futher down the line. I think the standard procedure in my area is if the placenta is low at the 20 week scan they will re-scan for placenta location at 32 weeks, with nothing in between unless you have additional complications.

What is OS?

I was told at 19 weeks mine was partially covering my cervix, a private sca at 27 weeks showed it was totally covering.
Got NHS scan this friday to check again, but everytime i see my midwife or GP they tell me to work on the basis that i will have a C Section at 37 weeks.

What is OS?

To be honest I'm not sure but I presume it refers to the cervix :dohh: (I was just going off what they said to me at the scan and in my notes!!)

My only advice to you is to see what they say at your next scan and deal with the decision then - after all, there's nothing you can do to get your placenta to move, so there's no point in worrying about it. My own thoughts were that if it came down to it, I would prefer not to have a section but if I needed one then maybe a planned one is easier to prepare yourself for than an emergency one - I always like to find that silver lining :hugs:

Hi Abby,

I was told at my 19 weeks scan that my placenta was low lying and posterior.

I then had a private 4D scan at 28 weeks and an NHS growth scan at 29 weeks which both showed the placenta was still low and just next to my cervix so there was nothing between it at all.

I have a placenta location scan in 2 days so this Thursday 13th September to see if it has moved.

I will let you know how I get on.

I have not had any bleeding and got told to avoid sex etc...

Hi Ladies,

I got told at my private gender scan at 16 weeks that I too have a posterior placenta that is on my cervix. I have bleed at 6,9,15 and now yesterday at 17 weeks. Am slightly worried as yesterday I passed a clot. My hospital won't see me until my 20 week scan as it hasn't been diagnosed by them yet. I have 2 weeks to wait which is frustrating.

Leeann please let us know what they say as I know posterior placenta's don't necessarily move as much as anterior ones. Good luck.

I hope your ok, I have my fingers x 4 u.

I went 4 my scan 2day and my placenta is still low lying and just underneath the babies head. Baby is head down.

They said there is still a small chance it could move so r re scanning me in 2 weeks. If it has not moved I will be admitted 2 hospital and have my section around 38 weeks so will be in hospital 4 2 weeks plus :0(

I'm really quite scared now x

Hi Leanne,

Sorry to hear it hasn't moved :(. Have they told you how far away from your cervix it is? From what I understand they like posterior placenta's to be 3cm away. Just wondered if this is what they have said to you. I'm interested to know how close it was at your 19 week scan and has it moved at all? Just wanted some idea of what I can expect if my 20 week scan confirms what they said at my 16 week.

Please don't worry about having a C-section. I know plenty of ladies that have had one and it's been no problem at all. It wouldn't bother me at all if i had to have one. I have had 3 children naturally and I just want baby out safe and sound. What are you worried about? Is it the surgery or not knowing what to expect? If I can help with answers I will.

Take care x

I replied on the other thread, but i was re-scanned yesterday and my placenta is still totally covering my cervix (posterior).

im seeing a consultant on monday to draw up a care plan for between now the op x

I think mine is partially covering the cervix and a small part of it is under the babies head. There is nothing between it and the cervix :0(

They are not very hopeful that it will move but as per routine scan again at 36 weeks before booking the section.

From what I believe it's moved further down since my 20 week scan.

Thanks for your help and advice, I agree that it's the safer option with my condition but m just scared about the bleeding that might happen with it.

Ive been told that there is a higher risk of bleeding

Xx

I had this with my last pregnancy. Placenta previa was found at my 20 weeks scan so I had another at 33 weeks. It had moved and I had a spontaneous vaginal birth on my due date.
The likelihood of it moving depends on the severity. If it completely covers the OS (yes that's part of the cervix), aka a complete previa, then it likely won't move. But if it's partial or just low lying the. Chances are it will migrate as the uterus grows.

i had a scan the other day at 21 weeks & found out i have a low lying placenta - right next to cervix poor bub looked squashed by placenta! i am being re - scanned in 2 weeks to see if it has moved up or down, but doc thinks its on its way down because i have been having weekly scans prior to this one for parvo virus infection & it seems to be getting lower & lower :-(
