Hi all

we recently had some fertility tests done through the gp. the main issue is me. I have high prolactin, low progesterone and follicles on my right ovary so pcos is suspected. We've been referred to a fertility specialist and gp says they'll probably prescribe clomid.

My question is this really. How would clomid help? I'm ovulating on my own so the big issue seems to be low progesterone. I don't really get how clomid would help with that. I'm also concerned about the side effects and risk of multiples. I've heard multiples are always high risk. I already have one little boy (conceived naturally after 11 months) and I don't want to end up with a high risk pregnancy and birth that would affect my ability to care for him.

I'd be interested in other people's experiences of clomid, or experience with other forms of treatment for low progesterone

It could help because the issue with low progesterone starts with the egg, clomid could help you produce a better more mature egg which means a healthier corpus luteum that will produce more progesterone in the 2ww.

Thank you. If you don't mind me asking have you taken clomid? I'm wondering how bad the side effects are and how high the multiples risk is.

Yes I have taken it many times , I got lucky and conceived the first cycle but it ended in early miscarriage , I had the typical side effects , mood swings , occasional hot flashes and headaches, really sore swollen ovaries, then the 2ww symptoms were stronger due to the progesterone being higher, all worth it if it works though! .

On clomid I think the risk of twins is around 10% with a much lower chance of higher order multiples, if your concerned about multiples your doctor should monitor your ovaries and if there are too many follies ( more then 3)which is rare with clomid the cycle should be canceled. you should be monitored anyway to make sure the uterine lining is thick enough for implantation to occur.

I agree with PP on how it helps.

I also have taken it. Didn't have many side effects, extra warm at night (took it before bed) and headaches but I'm prone to headaches.
Also PP is exactly right about the 10% chance. My doctor said chances of twins without clomid is 1-2% and with its between 7-10% with the chances of high multiples less than 1%.

Thank you. That's really useful. I've scared myself watching the multiples episode of one born every minute! did the side effects stop you doing anything? My main worry is being too ill to look after my little boy, or preventing me from being able to work/study. I work 4 days and am doing a distance learning course so rarely have time off. No time to be ill!

Nope didn't prevent me from anything. I really only had side effects at night or early morning. But also, the cramps are real. And they are random times. However, they never lasted more than a few minutes so it shouldn't interfere with your daily life :) good luck!

I was on a high dose and it did not prevent me from doing anything.

I just finished a high dose of clomid (150mg/5days) ... I was moody and had random hot flashes but nothing that interfered with working or caring for my son.

Thanks all. Good luck ruby! I hope it works for you!
