Low progesterone

Hello,

I'm new here and was looking for some insight on what the deal is with low progesterone.

I'm about 6 wks along now. I've had two previous miscarriages (one devastating one @ 19 wks in 2015, and one chemical @ 5wks in March this year). Needless to say, I'm very nervous being pregnant again. I have a 5 year old daughter, so hopefully we'll be able to have another. But I'm 37 and H is 41, so time is not exactly on our side.

I saw a new OB Thursday, and they drew labs for progesterone and Hcg.

My progesterone was only 6.8, but my Hcg was 2,191. The NP said that my progesterone was borderline low, but Hcg was in the normal range, so they are not super worried. I asked whether I should start a prog. supplement, but they said their clinic doesn't do this b/c studies haven't shown that supplementing prevents miscarriage. I'm thinking about calling another office on Monday and getting a second opinion.

Fast forward a few days, and literally ALL my pregnancy symptoms have gone away. I'm preparing for the worst.

Anyone have any insight on the progesterone thing? Is it too late to try and call another OB and get started on supplements? Or do supplements even work?

Would love to hear your experiences. I'm kinda resigning myself to thinking this is over, frankly. :( Also, one of my good friends' out of town wedding is Saturday. Would be really extra sucky if I had to miss it due to miscarrying.

From what I've seen on here, lots of OBs in USA are happy to prescribe progesterone supplements to help prevent MC.

Personally (this is UK), I got my midwife to test my progesterone mid first tri, and it came back low but the hospital refused to put me on supplements. They said they don't believe supplements help and that research shows levels fluctuate, and low progesterone was an effect of MC rather than a cause. I was distraught and felt they were leaving me to lose my baby without intervention ... here I am still pregnant though so looks like fortunately they were right in my case about levels fluctuating.

Still, if I had lost the baby I would have wanted to know that I had done everything possible to prevent MC so if you can ring another OB and get put on supplements, I still would.

Good luck hun.

Thank you for your reply! It gives me hope. I can see both sides of the argument. I think I'll make some calls tomorrow and see what other clinics say.

I was put on progesterone supplements due to recurrent miscarriage. I actually have started it 5 days post ovulation. I have also been taking heparine and aspirin because of the same disorder. It is one of those supplements that, while it may not help, in no way should hinder a pregnancy, so my dr said we will throw everything at it we can.
