Hi, I'm new to bottle feeding and just wondered how many of you are pre making bottles (eg for throughout the night). The midwifes say to make them as you need them but I think that is just not practical thorughout the night, especially as when my baby wakes up for a feed she wants it straight away and doesn't want to hang around for me making and cooling her milk.

Is this a fairly new thing as most people I know with children have pre made bottles?

Also, if you are pre making them are you putting them in the fridge to cool the warming them in some hot water when you need them?

Sorry for all the questions, just need a bit of advice

I never premade, we used powder and didn't boil water (it's not necessary here) so I would run the tap til it got warm then fill the bottle add the powder and give it to him.

I premake the bottles with water only and store them in the fridge once they've cooled.

When she wants one I just heat up the bottle and then add the formula.

All HV's, MW's and the companies who make the formula have to recommend that each bottle is made up fresh as and when it's wanted. But people have premade bottles for years - my parents done it with me and my brother and sister and we all turned out fine!

It's just so they cover their own backs just in case something did go wrong with premade bottles. After all, they explain how to make up bottles for a day out in the book I was given by my HV, so what's the difference between doing that and going out to staying indoors and doing it??

We premake the bottles with water and store at room temptrature, when needed we heat the water very slightly and add the formula. Waiting for the kettle to cool for up to 30 mins before being able to use the water each time you need a feed is just stupid, no baby is going to wait for that and even then you would then have to cool the bottle down, its just not practical. Our MW is the one who suggested doing it this way so Im not worried and bottles have been made this way for so long now. Hope this helps, take care :hugs: XX

If im at home i make them as he needs. He feeds every 3.5/4 hours so i know when to make a bottle up.

When i go out i take a little flask and a milk power box and make them that way.

Thats just the way I choose to make them!

I premake the bottles completely. Two at a time. The powder needs to be added to water 70 degrees plus because its not sterile. I then store them in the fridge and heat in the microwave when needed.

I use cartons when I go out.

I was pre making them when i used SMA formula, this was fine.
I have recently changed to aptimal easy digest and if i premake them and store them in the fridge, the formula seperates slighty????? Its ok if i shake it up but not sure if its safe to use??

I make enough bottles for a day. The formula I use says not to refrigerate for more than 24 hours. If I'm going out then I put boiled water in the bottles and just take the formula along in a tub.

I make up for 24 hours. Fridge, and reaheat in hot water when needed.

It's quite new the make it up as you need but like you say can be hard, my daughter can wait few mins to take the chill off, but no way would she wait for the hot to cool to drink!

oh if going out ive got a fisherprice flask and take powder, or use the water in flask to reheat a premade

i make up enough for the day and store them in the fridge, and heat them in a jug of boiled water. i have a fisher price flask which i fill with boiled water to heat them up when i go out.

This make them up as you need them nonsense is a new thing brought in since my last son in 2002,and tbh i think it makes things even harder and more hassle for new parents, all my other 5 kids were fed their bottles done this way,as was i, as was my mum and we all turned out healthy enough!!

I boil water, leave it to cool for half an hour and then store it in a thermos flask for over night that way I can make the bottles up as I go but with minimal fuss. It takes a couple of minutes max, I then just put the bottle to cool in some cold water for 5 mins and it's reay to go. That's the way the hv told me to do it and Alex has always been fine, I think it's a kind of good middle road between making htem up fully as you need and premaking them.

excactly what i do :D

xx

i use the ready made all the time , i use a 500ml carton and pre make 12 hours worth which is 4 feeds for alex, then 12 hours again overnight. it says on the carton it can be kept in fridge for 24 hours

do you find that more expensive? soz im just curious lol
cos i use the ready made cartons when we go out and wondered if it was more to use them all the time?

With my 1st child I would pre-make bottles left them to cool and put them in the fridge. You will use up all the bottles in 24hrs anyway due to the constant feeding.

My sister did this with all her 4 children it didn't do her kids any harm.

I also have a fisher price flask so that when I go out I'd warm the bottles up by sitting them in the flask. Now on my 2nd baby I intend to do the same.

My god, there is so much contradiction out there now when it comes to how to raise a baby. I'm fed up listening to it.

it works out at about £15 a week rather thanabout £7-8 the cost of a box , we decided to do it this way for a couple of reasons
1) convience
2) im a bit nurotic when trying to scoop the powder
3) alex is a really windy baby and because you dont have to mix the powder you get less bubbles .
4) supposidly babies who use the ready made put more weight on because of the way they preserve it is has more sugar in and alex weight went down to 4lb 11oz just after he was born. so me and HV thought that this may have helped

when i go down to 1/2 pay from work we might have to rethink but at the min we find it easier doig it this way.

i premake with just waterfor 24 hours and store them in the fridge. then add the formula when needed. my midwife said this was ok, and my sister in law did the exact same thing with my niece who has just turned 1 and shes fine. to be honest, my little one doesnt like the milk too so at bedtime i just take the bottles up that i need and by the time hes ready to feet its at room temp and i add the milk. i agree that its not fair to ask a baby to wait while you sterilise, boil and cool!

I boil the water, and once it's cooled I put all that I've boiled into bottles and store them in the cupboard. When it's time for a feeding I'll scoop the proper amount into the bottle, shake up and give it to her.

I don't warm her food, or her bottles as I don't want to be stuck while out somewhere and her reject what I'm trying to give her because it's not warm enough. :)

Thanks girls, I'm glad its not just me who thinks making them as and when is impractical. My little girl is only 1 week old and the amount of contradicting information I have been told is unreal!

I use concentrate; on the can it says you can make it up and store it in the refridgerator, but you should use it all up within 48 hrs.

I did use the powder once, but didn't like it and switched back, I made the bottles up in advance, TBH everyone I know personally who uses the powder does this too.

I saw OH's cousin make it up once when her son was nearly 1; she boiled the water in a kettle, put it into a big glass measuring cup (those giant ones).. scooped the correct amount of formula into it, and then poured it into the bottles.

She heats the bottle in a bottle warmer when it's time for her son to eat.
