I know this is asked on here in some form or another all the time but I am getting really confused....

It isn't practical to make up each bottle as we go so we're planning to pre-prepare about 3 bottles at a time (which will be used within 12 hours max) - as far as I understand there are two options to pre-making and I don't know which one to use...??

1. Sterilise bottles. Boil kettle. Leave to cool for 20-30 mins. Pour required amount of water from kettle into 3 bottles and leave in fridge (or on the side... not sure which is best). Add formula when required and warm to taste. Advantage being that by not adding the powder till needed that bacteria doesn't have a chance to grow.

2. Sterilise bottles. Boil kettle. Leave to cool for 20-30 mins. Pour required amount of water from kettle into 3 bottles, add formula, cool and leave in fridge. Warm to taste. Advantage being that by adding the powder when the water is approx 70 degrees that any bacteria in the formula is destroyed.

The two methods totally conflict and no idea which one to go for - what do you all do??

Hi, this probably wont help you lol, but i used both methods, i used the made up with formulae in when he was newborn as who wants to be measuring formulae at silly o clock in the morning, i had a mini fridge in the bedroom, and now hes bigger and only on 2 bottles a day i use the latter mainly because if hes had a big or late dinner he wont drink all his milk so i pour away what water i dont need and save the powder, i have no idea which is best, i would think they're both the same but im no expert. Conratulations by the way. :)

the second one. The first tecnically isnt premaking and isnt recommended as the bacteria isnt killed. X

Definitely second one. First one makes no sense to me although people suggested this to me as the way to make up bottles. Spoke to my midwife who confirmed the second option was the safest.

option 2 also here for the same reason as the posters above have said, if the formula isn't added to water over 70 degrees the bacteria isn't killed :flower:

i do what it says on the tin!
to premake and put in the fridge for upto 24 hours.
i dont boil water though because i used bottle nursery water.

Deffo the second for me - so long as bottles are quick cooled and refridgerated, the bacteria growth is very very minimal :)

I also premake using the second method x

Just out of interest how would you rapid cool them ? Straight in the fridge or in some cold water first?

Then if lo likes room temp what would you do - warm them or leave them to stand in room temp?

Then if you are taking them out do you heat them up and keep warm or keep cool and heat up when required?

Sorry if I sound a bit thick!

Rapid cool them by putting them in cold water for 10 or so mins before popping them into the fridge. If your baby likes 'room temp' milk, warm the milk enough to just take the chill out. When going out, if im going shopping and baby is due a bottle within an hour or so i warm it before i go out because i know it will be drunk soon. If baby isnt due a bottle for a while i take it cold and pop it into a bottle cool bag, and then find a cafe when out to warm it up. If im going to a friends etc then i chuck the bottle in their fridge when i get there. X

if your choosing out of the 2 the 2nd one. if you intrested what i do and ive had no problems at all is i make up 5 bottles (24 hours) and just boil the kettle and then make up the feed when its boiled. stick the pre made bottles in cold water. i usally use the sink and then put them in the fridge. My LO is fine on them and when shes hungry i get a bottle out of the fridge and heat it. x
