Maternity Units in Manchester area??

Spooky, Im in Hollingworth...probably drive past both of you in the very local area every day, haha.
Anyway, I had my son at Tameside and have nothing bad to say about it at all. My health problems were completely taken into account and I was given a private room straight away. I was kept informed of what was happening with my labour and even though I ended up on my back with feet in stirrups (so NOT what I wanted) I still feel happy with the birth because I was kept informed of why. Only nice things to say about the midwives that I dealt with last time and this time, nothing been too much trouble. If I HAD to go into hospital this time (I plan a home birth) I would certainly go there again and be happy with the care and facilities.
Having said that Ive always been well treated at Tameside for things other than birth so Im sort of fond of the hospital now as they have saved my life on a couple of occassions.

I encontered my first awful mw yesterday at Wythenshawe. Thankfully encountered a lovely one at the same time.

Just booked my antenatal classes and not many only 3 but they sound useful.

2 hour class on active labour and a tour of the hospital
2 hour class on breathing and relaxation techniques
2 hour class on breastfeeding

Also been told I can go to the local midwife run aquanatal classes which are very under subscribed at my local pool in Wythenshawe so just need to call the pool to check they are on.

Now need to find a decent tankini with support!!!

Blooming Marvellous??????

Bravissimo do fab supportive swimwear if you have larger boobs too:thumbup:

I looked at bravimsimo but couldn't see maternity tankinis am I just being daft?

I like one in mamas and papas but not sure what the support is like.

Doesn't have to be a maternity tankini babe....it'll stretch. I have swimming costumes from Bravissimo and they stretched fine.

I'd rather get a well supportive non-mat one that an unsupportive mat one:thumbup:

There's a mamas&papas at Manchester Fort, take a trip over and try one on. Bravissimo is in the Triangle in Manchester, near the big wheel thingy:hugs:

Thank you, i'm always up for more shoppgn trips. Im a DD/E so support is what I need. All my normal costumes I cant fit in as they are very sporty and the tums wont stretch!

hi everyone im currently 10 weeks this will be my first very exccited but alot of questions i am sure you are all aware, does anyone know what size bravismo go upto?
also got my first midwife appointment in two weeks aand trying to decide wether to go to tameside hospital or stepping hill for the birth any suggestions?
thanks

Hi im booked to have this baby at Stepping Hill and I had my daughter there in 2009. Cannot fault the hospital at all, midwives cant do enough for you, very supportive and helpful.

They plowed well over £1 million into the maternity unit and neonatal unit in 2009 and it looks really good, up to date and clean. They are currently plowing even more money into the maternity unit to give them another post-natal ward as they are so busy.

Give the maternity unit a call and go and have a look round, it wont do any harm and you will be able to make an informed decision and go where you feel most comfortable and where you feel you will get the best care.

That's very useful thankyou very much will certainly be giving them a
Call Xx

stepping hill are great... I went through my ectopic with them.... I got pregnant a month after and they've been great and looked after me more than i could have imagined....i also have my physio there for my pgp. Definalty reccomend them.
Plus they have the birthing centres! X

i gave birth in stepping hill as well, they were wonderful there :)
xx

Bit freaked out about answering here in case I know people in real life and didn't realise but never mind!

I gave birth to my son at Stepping Hill and was not impressed. I had heard how our maternity services here topped the maternity charts and felt very confident, especially as the community MWs are excellent. Unfortunately it turns out the policies used to get me in (I was planning a homebirth) are not actually even NICE recommendations and I wasn't given any choice in the matter though I now know I should've been.

I had a classic escalation of intervention. They had me pushing at 3cm because my contractions got suddenly stronger; they then removed me from the pool and gave me pethidine to slow everything down again. I ended up on syntocinon and had an epidural after 30 hours as I couldn't manage anymore and I'd gone so far form my birthplan I hardly knew what to do. But the epi failed and there were no anaesthetists available to re-site it and it's failure to numb the contractions but complete success in paralysing me meant I required an assisted delivery. I then had to stay in to be seen by a paediatrician which took 13 hours (I was seen at midnight!) and they gave me no food despite my 35 hour labour til breakfast the following day. Not impressed. So much so I'm going to meet with the Supervisor of Midwives to go through the experience. All that said I am booked there again generally because I am having a homebirth and they will probably have to sedate me to get me into hospital this time. It's by far the closest hospital to me so in case of a real emergency I'd rather be closer.

My sister has had all three children at Tameside and I was born there too. My sister has been treated pretty well there and hasn't had to have any unnecessary interventions.

But everyone's experience is different. It depends a lot on how things go at the time, how well informed you are about your rights and how thorough your birth plan is. Good luck choosing!

I had my baby boy at Stepping Hill just over a week ago, he was born by elective caesarian due to being breech. The staff on the delivery suite and in theatre were all very lovely and calm and I have to say the whole experience was a lot less stressful than I had imagined despite it taking almost one and a half hours to get a spinal in (due to my anatomy not the anaesthetist)!!
I was moved up onto the maternity fairly quickly and again the staff were lovely and v helpful. However I did find it quite busy up on the ward, I was in a room with 4 beds on a 28 bed ward and at times it did feel very noisy. The midwives are fairly busy but I was never left long if I pressed my call button. We were pretty much left to get on with things but for me I found this quite nice, just depends how much help you are expecting.
Depending what kind of birth you want to go for Stepping Hill have a birthing centre, run by midwives with birthing pools etc or a delivery suite if there are any complications.
Corbar is a very small (5/6 beds) midwife run birthing centre. It can only deal with straightforward deliveries and in emergencies you would need to be transferred by ambulance to Stepping Hill. They have a birthing pool but pain relief is limited. It is very relaxed, with kitchen facilities and a conservatory/ lounge area and lots of help on hand.
I decided to get transferred to Corbar after 2 days as I didnt feel quite ready to go home but was finding it a bit too noisy on the ward. I got a lot of help with breastfeeding and am so glad I decided to have a night there as the staff have got all the time in the world for you and the food was much nicer!
I dont know anything about St Annes except my sister in law is a midwife there and I know they deal with high risk births.
