max now has a stidor!! which is rasping when he breathes so u can hear him breathing and VERY loudly!!!! he sounds like a old man that smokes a 100 fags aday!!!! they have sed this was caused because he was ventalated after his op for a while and when the woke him up after three day he did move a lot which has imflamed his throat!!! they call it "swinging" on the tube!! he is on injection steriod three times a day and a nebaliser (sp) mask on his face twice a day! to try to reduce the sound!! other than this he seems fine! but they have sed he may have him rasping for a long time and are refreeing him to an ETN specalist!! he cant cry really anymore either as hes vocals cords are swollen as well and they dont know if this will go bk to normal either! just wanted to know if any one else has experianced this!!!!

I think a referral to an ENT (Ears, Nose & Throat) doctor is a good idea. With the use of the nebuliser and steroids, hopefully the stridor will start to settle.

I'm sorry don't know too much about this, speak to the doc,s about it i,m sure it is something that will correct itself. sending a big hug to max.xxxxxxxxx:hugs:

hi ya he has been referred to ENT and they are sending him to a specalist at st thomas's in london for investigation!!!! arrgh one thing after another!!!!!

Tommy's is supposed to be one of the best hospitals around for paediatric specialists, though. Good luck! x

Hi MaxsMummy I think Freddys friend in the unit had something similar as she was ventilated for months and in the end she had such a bad rough breath where her throat was so ruff from the tubes, I think she went to st ormands st to operate and i believe she is doing much better now! I wish you both well xx

My 24 weeker had stridor and still does sometimes. It was caused from intubation as well as a paralyzed left vocal cord from his PDA surgery. Needless to say he makes very little sound when he cries, you can hear him but its raspy and weak. And always has been.

We have been to ENT and had him scoped several times without change.

Your son didn't have PDA surgery did he? If he did there is a chance he has an injured vocal cord, its a very common result of PDA surgery because the nerve that works the cords is near where they operate while closing the PDA.

If it's just stidor caused by intubation, it should get better. I have only heard and read of a few cases of preemies where their voice never returned to normal. That being said, they could still talk and be heard, they just had a raspy and quieter than normal voice.

Which is what my son will have. It's not as though he makes zero noise. =)

I hope this helps, I would get to an ENT ASAP as they will have the best advice and clearest picture of what is truly going on.

no experiences im afraid hun just a HUGE :hugs:. I know it feels like one thing after another but it wont be long til lil' Max is home fighting fit and shouting the house down. Hope the investigations go well xx
