Considering I had two sweeps in my first pregnancy I can't believe I have only just thought of this, but, I looked up exactly what a sweep is:

Membrane sweeping is done by your midwife or doctor. While internally examining you, she will simply "sweep" a finger around your cervix (neck of your womb). The aim is to separate the membranes around your baby from your cervix. This releases hormones called prostaglandins, which may kick-start your labour.

How can they sweep around there if there is a mucus plug blocking the entrance of your cervix??

Can't believe the things I ask on here sometimes

hehehe! I would like to know more about this too. I look forward to some good responses.... C'mon ladies!

I guess the mucus plug gets swept away whilst she performs it as afterwards most ladies seem to lose their plug or their show. x

 I was wondering what a sweep was :( As lots of ladies talk about them and i wasn't going to google it as i was worried about what i would find.. :dohh: Thanks for the info! :)

i got one they poke thru it lol very painful! althou i ended up bleeding with mine so it went rong.

they can only do the sweep if your cervix has started to open a little, otherwise they can't get their fingers in there. in which case, you might have lost the plug already, or it will get dislodged during the sweep. that's why most people have mucousy discharge afterwards, and a little bleeding is also common, and doesn't mean anything is wrong. my midwife told me that it isn't necessarily painful, but that if it isn't at least uncomfortable it probably won't work! looking forward to that, then!!!!!

Hey I'm glad someone asked this!
I had a sweep on weds and apparently was 2cms but still had a fairly 'long' cervix (whatever that means??)
since then I've had a blob of mucusy discharge but it was clear not stained with blood? Was that some of my plug or what??
Urgh 8 days overdue I am going crazy and considering going for a long car drive without my phone notes bags or anything just to tempt fate.....

I was 2cm at the sweep, cervix not fully affects & pointing wrong way or something lol, i had mine 7 days over, she came 9 days over :)
Yes plug/show can be white, all mine was in my first pregnancy till i had an internal found out to be 5cm

Gettinng through musuc plug wouldnt really be difficult as its all soft so doing a sweep is easy as, way i look at it.
