so seeing as baby is due in January, all DF's family have gone mad buying things as christmas presents for us.

I asked DF the other day if he knew what baby clothes we had as I'd like them by the end of November to pack the hospital bag and don't want to leave it until 3 weeks before my due date to pack my bag.

He asked me to make a list of what I need in the bag as his mum and aunty had confirmed they had bought lots of clothes. Anything they haven't bought I will buy in the next few weeks to pack.

Bearing in mind this is our first baby, he's just looked at the list and said 'you don't need 3 new born and 2 0-3 baby grows!, you only need 1 for gods sake'

I think he thinks this baby will be put in a baby grow when it comes out and not get it dirty until we come out and get home (which will be at least 1 night, possibly 2)

He also said 'people just have a small holdall, not a suitcase!' grrrrrr

That sure is nice of your family to be buying so much stuff! :) My MIL bought a TON of baby clothes from a garage sale this summer, I'm pretty much set for the first 3 months. So much nicer than having to buy them all myself!

I'm in the States, so it may be different, but the hospital I'm going to has onesies and stuff that they dress the baby in until you go home. So I'm not worried about dressing the baby for the couple days I'm in the hospital. But that's just me personally. If you want to bring a bunch of clothes, go for it! And it's not like they'll take up a bunch of space in the suitcase anyhow :haha:

I don't think they provide any clothes in the uk, you need to bring them with you, they don't even provide formula anymore. I might just go an buy the stuff myself and pack it then use the stuff his family has got when we get home. I'm just thinking the baby might be big (I'm 5ft 8 and DF is 6ft 5) and not get more than a week or so out off the newborn clothes and don't want them to go to waste.

They have no idea, bless them lol.

Pack as many clothes as you like!

Our hospital provided everything we needed while there (clothes, diapers, blankets, hats, formula if desired, etc.), so all I will took was a going home outfit. However, I didn't want to sit around in a hospital gown, so I took clothes for myself each day to wear. If you need clothes for you and the baby, as well as shampoo, toothpaste, and stuff like that, then you may need a suitcase. :)

My hospital will be supplying soaps and creams for baby and newborn diapers. They will provide formula if needed, I just need to bring a bottle, one warm blanket and two receiving blankets and enough clothes for baby in the hospital.

They will give me anything from breastpads to erm................you know what pads. I need to take a dark towel, nighties, and disposible panties. Get nice ones from Carriwell. Oh, and toiletries of course. Our doctors say that our bags need to be packed from 26 weeks already.

What you need to do is call where you will be delivering...ask how long they like to keep you in on average and what they provide while you're there.

Some places even have a list of what you're to bring.

If the hospital isn't giving you baby clothes, diapers etc then you will need to bring them and on top of that if they want you to stay at least 24 hours you will need all the things that keep you happy as well as the baby.

The OH can say what he wants but at the end of the day he isn't the one who has to stay there and be comfortable. When I worked in a hospital in the UK (Cambridge) they kept you in for a min of 36 hours and I watched some babies keep in one outfit and others go through 5...it's always better to be prepared!

Quick note to say to him to - this is his first and in less he is a doctor I have huge doubt that he knows what most women pack or what you do when he isnt there over night :)

Do what you think is best for you :)

thanks girls. they keep you in a minimum of 1-2 nights for your first baby, more if it's a c section. they don't rpovide any clothes or formula if it's needed but they'd probably have nappies and creams if mums haven't brought them in. luckily one of our friend had a baby in July and she went in on a Sunday to be induced then came out on Tuesday so she'll be able to set him straight. funny how he'll listen to someone else's advice but not mine.

we have the hospital tour on 12th November so they'll no doubt let us know then.

I honestly don't see what it has to do with him how much stuff I take with me as long as Im happy and feel prepared. He just needs to carry the bag, or I'll get a porter to do it :)
