metformin + insulin ..

well i was told today i have gestational diabetes, and i had to go quickly to the hospital my reading where so high on GGT they gave me a monitor and metformin 3 times daily , i have to go back with my readings on fri, and then be set to take insulin, im sooo worried is it common to be put on this tablets and insulin at same time? or is my diabetes alot more complicated then they are saying?!?

I must admit, i havent heard of taking metformin and insulin, its easier to control with just insulin, id be interested to know how you get on when you next go back to the hospital.

I would have thought that if they had to put you on insulin on Friday then you would stop taking the metformin? I'm food controlled at the mo though so i'm not entirely sure, but I thought it was one or the other. If you don't mind me asking what was your GTT reading? I was diagnosed last Monday and the midwife told me that my reading wasn't that high and it was nothing to worry about. I have nothing to compare it against though, so not sure if she was just trying to reassure me as I was pretty upset 2hrs after the drink my reading was 9. something.

my 1st result was 7.4 that was without anyfood then i had the yucky drink waited two hrs and they said that result had come back 16.8 ekk very high put me on metforming straight way till fri see what happens but today my readings today are still around 12. the doctor explained it will be prob both i will result in,. got me a bit confused maybe he ment trying metformin then if doesnt work it will be insulin? x

Hey there. I'm on both and know lots of ladies who are too. They start tablets then add insulin if sugars still high or get higher as pregnancy progresses. The metformin means you don't need quite as much insulin dosage. It's a newish thing. My last pregnancy I was on just insulin and am finding it easier to control this time with the tablets too. Try not to worry. It takes a while to get your head round it all but it's not so bad once you do. Good luck hon

aw thanks! What were ur readings to put u on both? After i eat a hr i take blood still 12 plus. Im under standing its stil high as she told me. It should b no more then 7.8 . Worring process. Heard they dnt let u go to ur due date. ? U r induced before this. Is it true. ? X

Hi hon. My sugars wernt that high when I started I was throwing them off in the high 9's had the met for two weeks then insulin I guess I started that about 20 weeks. I'm due dec 27 th so getting nearer and I'm really used to the whole malarkey. I feel really well looked after by hospital too. I've no definate answer to induction this time because they decide according to scans and sugar control. But I don't mind. I was induced at 38+5 with my last and had a fab normal delivery. No problems and not that much pain really. Good luck honey. And try not to worry too much the baby will be fine and so will you x

thanks alot fifi, its nice to know your not alone dealing with things! and always some1 to advise you im glad the hosp is looking after you well and they told me i will be also and that y i have to go alot of the time to the nurse and consultant, my reading are pretty high so they wanted me to start insulin straight away but gave me the benefit of the doubt and said ok we will try you on metformin, even with that still reading over 12 .. ah gl for dec!! x im due 8th jan maybe be a 2010 baby hehe xx
