I was prescribed metformin last week and started taking it on Friday last week. I was taking one tablet with my main meal (which was my evening meal). I was told to do this for 3 days then start taking 2 if I had so side effects. I felt fine so took 2 tablets. I did this for 4 days and I was told that someone should phone me and check my readings and how I was going and that if I felt ok to up my dose to 3 tablets.
Well, nobody phoned me but I didnt feel too bad taking 2 and I had been taking that does for 4 days so I took 3.
That was thursday evening and about an hour and a half afterwards I began vommiting quite violently. Luckily it was in the evening and my husband was home so onece I had emptied my stomach (tmi sorry) I finally crawled into bed and fell asleep.
The next day I tried to call my diabetes midwife or one of the diabetes nurses but I couldnt get hold of anyone so I havent taken it since.
I really do not want to go back to feeling that crappy so is there anything else I could take or is it onto insulin? What are the implications of taking insulin during labour?

Sorry for the long winded rant :)

Did you take 3 at once? I take 2 in the morning and 2 at night. I also have the ER version.

I'm on Metformin for PCOS, and started when we were LTTTC. I think 3 days is a short time to build up to 2 tablets, usually you get a little longer. Perhaps you could buy a tablet cutter and try 1 and a half tablets for a few days then up the dose again - ask if this is an option?

Also, I found that if I take Metformin exactly mid-way through my main meal, that helped with the side effects a lot.

Insulin causes weight gain and comes with the risk of hypoglycemia which metformin does not. Go back to the lower metformin dose you were able to tolerate for now. Some women need to increase the dose more slowly (like going up by one tablet every couple of weeks). The side effects are also usually temporary, so hang in there!

I started taking metformin for PCOS before I got pregnant, 3x a day. I had a horrible reaction to it like you did as well once I got to 3 pills, vomiting and the runs simultaneous, I was miserable. For me it only lasted 3 days, then my body adjusted and it hasn't made me sick since! Just give your body another day or two adjust. Or, decrease the dose to 2 again, and wait a little longer before going back to 3.

I also found like Kyla said, taking it halfway through a meal helped a lot also. Drinking a small glass of milk while taking pill helped at first for me as well too.

Hope you get to feeling better over the next day or two! It does get better, promise!

Had a chat with my diabetes midwife and she said to carry on taking just one for now then she will phone me at the end of the week to see about increasing to two again. I am probably going to be induced in 4 weeks so it wont be for long and my BGL seems pretty stable at the minute anyway.

I had issues taking metformin (but it was the other end, sorry tmi) and taking it towards the end of my meal helped greatly.

When I first started taking metformin (pre-pregnancy) it made me pretty nauseous. I'd agree that it's probably too soon to adjust your dose. Glad that the midwife is sorting you out though :)
