I know this isn't usually an issue when people talk about breastfeeding but has anyone else has this problem??

Because I've been exclusively expressing for 4 weeks and breastfeeding has only started to become successful in the past few days I am producing WAY more milk than she needs (that would also be the reason why I have about 8 litres of EBM in the freezer) ..

At every feed Amelia gulps and gulps for a couple of minutes, then needs winding and this carries on for 10-20 minutes before she refuses to take any more..

I've done some research and I also think I have a 'forceful let down' because of the over supply.. and that is what is causing the constant wind/colic like symptoms.

Has anyone else has this problem? and if so what did you do to relieve the issue?

Thanks in advance

xXx

Firstly congrats to you both regarding the breast feeding xxx

I 'think' I have this problem. When I have a 'letdown' Olivia would gulp really quickly then end up taking down lots of air with the milk or the flow is too fast for her so she ends up choking and coughing on my flow. Now when I feel the let down begin (I get a tingly sensation in my boobs) I unlatch Olivia and catch the letdown in a muslim cloth. I do this everytime I feel the letdown and Olivias wind problem seems to be improving.

Over active let down and over supply are basically the same thing. I know Jemima had this in the past and adjusted her feeding positions so that gravity was against the f low to stop Poppy coughing and spluttering on the fast flow.

As a side issue if you find you have masses of spare milk (like I did earlier on) you can look into milk donation. I donated all my 'spare' milk to my local SCBU for preemies hwo's mum's were struggling or unable to pump for some reason. I cant tell you how great it is to think you are also helping other babies too.

Just a thought! :D

Yea i DEF have this too  TBH i had nooo idea what to do and she just got very good at coping with it and now it doesnt bother her. But yea i'd do the un latching into a muslin :)

I had/have this. I started block feeding. One boob for 2-3 feeds. I think I've just now finally got my supply under control. I had way too much foremilk--which is why I needed to block feed--so that my little girl could get the hind milk.

I had a problem with overactive letdown in the beginning, Hayden would start choking and pull away while I sprayed all over the place..it was lovely lol...poor kid is lucky I didn't drown him haha. I don't know it it just got better with his age, or as my milk settled more but it did eventually stop, I guess it was around a couple months though.

Hi.

I produce way too much milk too. I really want to donate but I find expressing incredibly painful and haven't been able to do it very much. I don't know what the solution is but my breasts get engorged pretty much everyday and always at night. I wake up in pools of milk and I squirt my daughter in the face whenever she feeds because of the forceful let down.

Sorry I don't have any helpful solutions. I tried (stupidly) to cut down on what I was eating to see if my supply would go down but it just made me feel sick and dizzy! I won't be doing that again.

Good luck

x

What would happen if you expressed some before feeding? Is that a really bad suggestion...? I was just thinking if you dont have quite as much milk then she wont be gulping and the let down might not be as strong... i could be wrong though.
