I was planning to get a Mirena IUD put in soon, but after a quick google search last night I found a page where lots of people were claiming it dramatically affected their milk supply. Does anyone have any experience?

I have a good supply and plan to BF for at least a year, my DD is only 5 weeks so I dont want anything affecting my supply (planning to get it done after about 7 weeks). I dont think I want to put it in just to take it out again!

What other long term contraceptive are people using? Would you recommend it?

Thanks :flower:

I had the Mirena and it didn't affect my milk supply at all. I had other problems with it so I don't have it anymore, but it was fine for breastfeeding.

I also tried the mini pill which did drop my supply, despite being told that it wouldn't.

The copper iud isn't supposed to mess with milk supply its a ten year plan birthcontrol its what I'm planning on getting. It doesn't have any hormones in it.

i was on the mini pill (cerazette) after my first and had no problems with supply - is it the hormones that create the (potential) problem?

I don't know if the hormones affect anything..but hormone free birthcontrol doesn't affect your menstrual cycle.

You can definitely get the depo injection will breastfeeding x

I got Mirena at 8 weeks and have had no problems with supply. It only releases localized hormores so it is safe for breastfeeding.
