Moses basket mattress question

Hi Everyone

I have been given a Mamas and Papas moses basket that all my nephews had and a colleague has given me a brand new Mothercare mattress, however this doesn't fit. So I spoke to my sister who gave me the basket and she said you have to have a Mamas and Papas mattress. She still has hers and she says I am more than welcome to have it. The foam part is fine I can wash the cover on a high temperature wash. What does everyone else think about using a second hand mattress to be honest it looks hardly used as I think my nephew grew out of the Moses Basket quite quickly.

It would probably be OK but personally I would not risk it as I am a worrier and there is some debate as to whether there is an increased risk of SIDS with a secondhand mattress. YOu don't have to have a mamas and papas one, you can buy one made to size online and they are very inexpensive. I got my daughter's one from here and will be buying a new one for this baby from the same people:

Im having my sisters moses basket and mattress and I havent thought twice about getting a new mattress for it. Shes my sister and my little nephew has been on that mattress not a complete stranger. Shes only sleeping in the basket in the day and in the night shes going in her cot from day 1 because its in my room anyway.

I picked one up in M&P for £15, I'm a bit of a worrier too so had to have a new one despite it being a second hand moses.

I'd go for a new one too if something (heaven forbid) was to go wrong you'd never forgive yourself.

i used my nieces one - but i knew she had only been it in the day for about 2 weeks.. she slept in a cot - as did my DD.. so I: didn't think it was much of a risk

Personally I would get a new one

but they say if you know the history of the mattress ie family,who used it,where its been stored then a good wash in the washing machine would be fine!!!!

try ebay and get a new one im sur ethey have great deals!

Yes, I got mine new from ebay for about £7, there are various sizes on there.

if its in good condition no marks or stains by all means use it,but if your not satisfied go buy one that will fit for your own reassurance.

I've got a cot matress that my son used, obviously I know where it's been and he's never been sick etc on it but I will be buying a new one. If anything was to happen (like SIDS) then the £35 it's gonna cost me to get a new one is nothing.

Well, I read somewhere that you can test a mattress by putting a fitted sheet on it and if you feel like a bubble in the middle like when the sheet doesn't touch the mattress then is not good as its bended from to much use, change it an get a new one. I did the test and it was like two inches away from the fitted sheet, when i ask y friend who gave me the moses she was honest and confessed that it was like third hand when she got it needless to say my baby its going straight into his cot I dont want a moses anymore.

some do have plastic covers but I think the vast majority are foam and have a removable cover for washing? I could be wrong.

Plenty of cot mattresses are plastic so can't see the harm in them?

What are the actual causes of SIDS from using a second hand mattress? Is it that it's not firm enough anymore? I've got a second hand Moses from a friend and I've yet to have s good look but the sheet test sounds very sensible, the foam ones aren't exactly hard wearing.

There was some research done that suggested that bacteria breeding within the mattress could be responsible for a threefold increase in SIDS. As I understand it, other research has not shown any significant coorelation between the use of secondhand mattresses and SIDS, so the jury is still out and I don't think that any link has been proven but I believe the official advice is still that you should use a new mattress for each baby, even if the mattress has only been used within the same family.
