I got a moses basket second hand a little while ago. It came with a mattress but I decided it would be best to get a new mattress for a new baby. I looked for the same mattress but that size isn't made anymore. So I went for a slightly bigger sized one as the one that came with it had some gaps around the edges, but the new one is a bit too big and curls up at the ends. But the size down would be even smaller than the mattress that came with it and the gaps would be too big. I was trying to save money this way but seems I would have been better off just buying a new basket with mattress to begin with but can't afford to now.

I don't really know what to do and I'm getting stupidly worked up and upset about it.

Can you not return it to the shop? If not, might sound daft but as those mattresses are quite thin can you trim it?
A small gap doesn't usually matter as babies don't move around much for the first 4 weeks.

I can return the mattress, but still leaves me with the dilemma that I don't have a mattress that fits and I don't really want to use the one that was already used because it has dents in it from the previous owners baby. I could trim it, but it's covered in that waterproof material so I'm thinking it I trim it the foam will spill out the ends.

And the smaller size will leave a good 5cm gap each end.

do you know if the other mattress only went through one child? Does it look worn at all?

Honestly if you think it does not look worn at all, has no lumps and is clean etc Im positive it will be safe to use the one it came with but totally understand your concern xx

ah just seen you mention dents do they different sized moses basket mattreses?

I went to the store where the basket actually comes from, and the woman said they only do one size of mattress now, the bigger one and that it fits all of their baskets. They don't do that basket anymore.

I'm super stressed, and know I'm being silly but I'm getting really worked up.

Hey hun, why don't you measure the mattress you need and post it up, I'm sure we can find you a lovely one that fits just right! I'd take the non fitting one back rather then cut it, I just think it's be safer.

Try not to stress hun :hugs: Get the new mattress back asap so you dont lose your money on it. I wouldnt suggest cutting it or anything. Dont forget if worst comes to absolute worst another 2nd hand one will only be about 15quid maximum on ebay...so the baby will defo have somewhere to sleep xx

I don't have a tape measure so can't measure it right now. The mattress that came with it is 68cm x 28cm and has 3 cm gap at each end. The new one I've bought is 74cm x 28cm and curls up at the ends. I suppose I could smoosh it down.. but worried if it curls back up it could mess with her posture or something... I don't know. The only other mattress size I've seen is 66cm x 28cm which is even smaller than the first.

I paid £28 for it on ebay.. did come with rocking stand though. But with the price of driving to collect it, and the new mattress - I should have just bought a damn new one.

Hi hun, I got a great mattress from babymatressesonline
It was custom made in a size 70 x28 and
Cost me 12.40. It does the job perfect!

If you go on that site and type 'Moses basket mattress' into the search it will come up as the second or third option it's £12:40 anyway so you'll know what one it is, the will supply it in any size! X

Ok I definitely woudn't recommend cutting it if you can take it back. I wasn't sure if it was the kind already in the waterproof outter thingy or a memory foam one which can be trimmed to size.

Sounds like the one you bought *should* have fit. So frustrating.

This company does mattresses to any size and don't look too pricey:
https://babymattressesonline.co.uk but bear in mind you do need a little space to tuck in blankets etc.

This site has one a bit longer than the first:
https://www.play.com/Baby/Baby/-/48...Cm/ListingDetails.html?searchfilters=c{4897}+

Is it foam? I got an Ikea one for a second hand cot my brother gave us, only to realise Ikea changed the size of the cots! So I had to trim the foam mattress with scissors and a knife and it fits perfect now! Couldnt be arsed with the faff of returning, searching for a new mattress etc!

Those websites look perfect, can't find anything on amazon, but I def reckon when you can to measure the basket. It's strange the original mattress size that came with it fit so badly, as 66x28 is easy to find anywhere.

I looked on the website and was really impressed til I got to the checkout and it added £4.75 for delivery!! :growlmad: I'm going to keep looking..

The big mattress does however fit in my pram, so I'm debating keeping it for that so that the pram is comfier when she's sleeping.. But then again it won't be long til she goes from the pram to the stroller anyway...

Well since I'm having no luck finding the size I need I have ordered the smaller 66cm x 28cm from Mothercare and hope one bedding etc is on it that the gaps won't be too bad.

Oooh I hate it when they whack on huge delivery at the end :(
With the smaller one though I'd just push it right to the top of the MB then tightly roll a small cellular blanket and place in a U shape at the foot end. No chance of gaps causing a problem then!

That's a good idea.
Oh my, what a load of hassle over a mattress! I'm just glad everything else is already bought and ready.
