Hi

We were told 2 weeks ago that we are high risk for downs and other things and were strongly advised to have an amnio. They've tried 3 times to get a sample and have failed 3 times. They've got into where they need to be with the needle but haven't been able to collect any fluid. I'm due to go in tomorrow for a 4th attempt but am feeling very apprehensive and am still very sore and crampy from the 3rd attempt. Has anyone else experienced anything similar? We have pretty much decided that if this attempt fails that we'll just not bother trying again - it's made slightly trickier because they have to go through my placenta - but I'm not sure how I'll cope with the rest of my pregnancy if I don't know how my baby is. Since we were first told of the potential problems I haven't been able to sleep and am emotionally all over the place.

Any advice or shared experiences would be hugely appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Hi I didn't want to read and run I really feel for you and know what you are going through :hugs::hugs: I was given a 1 in 28 chance of my baby girl having downs and im totaly gutted, I went for the amnio but coudn't go through with it so ive got another 19 weeks of worry and stress to find out for sure ive been given 2 detailed scans to check for soft markers and both look normal so fingers crossed.

You can only do what feels right for you :hugs: personally I would think that 3 attempts is plenty for now especially if you are still cramping and sore from the 3rd attempt maybe they could give you time to recover then try again, have they given you a detailed scan to check for any markers yet ??
I really hope you get your answers soon :hugs::hugs:

Thanks for your response. I'm so sorry you are going through a similar thing. Fingers tightly crossed for us both. So far we've had one detailed scan and although it looked OK the consultant told us that it was no guarantee and recommended we go ahead with the amnio. The biggest problem I'm having is not knowing - I just feel I want to be armed with all the information so I can prepare myself...does that make any sense?

Thinking of you and hoping that everything turns out well for you and your baby girl

Hi :flower: it makes total sense to be prepared and know in advance that way you can deal with any result before baby is born and it would deffinately make the rest of your pregnancy easier for you , make sure and keep us updated to how you got on hun :hugs:

They managed it on the fourth attempt. I'm now on strict bed rest and not allowed back to work until Tuesday - they've given me a hefty dose of antibiotics because they're concerned about the amount of holes they've put in me. We should get the results in about 12 days. I'm relieved it worked but am so worried that we put the baby through too much. I'm feeling pretty wobbly and am not looking forwards to the 12 day wait or for the results. Fingers and toes are so tightly crossed.

Thanks again for your responses, I really appreciate it. I've felt pretty lonely since we were first told about being high risk - my OH refuses to talk about it so it's been really nice to hear from you.

I didnt want to just read and run either, I really feel for u hon. I had ny 20wk scan and they found a heart abnormality, I got sent to a fetal cardiologist in London who confirmed there was a heart defect but they also threw into the mix the possibility of a chromosome defect, they offered me an amnio which I agreed to have purely because we wanted to be fully prepared for anything before the baby was born. I luckily only had 1 amnio but the 10 day wait was very difficult. Thankfully the baby has a full set of chromosomes so its just the heart defect we need to worry about which is fully operable. I hope everything goes really weel for u hon and have everything crossed for a great result and remaining happy, healthy pregnancy!!! :) x x x

Thanks so much. I'm so sorry your little one has a heart defect but so pleased it's fully operable - fingers tightly crossed for you and your beautiful baby.

The wait for the results is driving me insane. I've been on bed rest for the last week because of all the amnios and have had way too much time to think. I never thought I'd say this but I'm so looking forwards to going back to work on Tuesday so I can try to concentrate on something else.

Take care and thanks again.

I hate to worry you, but I had the same thing. Ultimately, there were chromosomal issues that weren't detectable with the testing an amnio does. Be prepared for genetic testing/counseling after birth. The baby had additional issues. I'm curious about what the heart defect was. Do you mind sharing?

I was told at our 20 week scan our baby wasnt growing propery and that one of the reasons might have been a chromosome problem so we had the amnio done on the Friday and we had the fast track results and got the results back on the Monday afternoon and there were no problems with the chromosome, the one that they thought our baby had was Edwards syndrome and we had asked all the problems that she would have and the things that she would have had and then not to survive were running through my mind he whole weekend, so all I done was cry for days. but the amnio wasnt sore on me at all just had to rest in bed all weekend, I have been signed off my work since the middle of June

Hope that you have the results that you are wanting but I really understand how you are feeling, huge hugs ot you xxx

I dont mind, the baby has a pulmonary atresia which basically means a hole in the heart and the 'plumbing' is inthe wrong place. I have had the amnio and the baby has a full set of chromosomes which has been confirmed so there is definately no worry of a chromosome defect as it has been tested for everything! :)

Thanks for sharing! My baby had hypoplastic left heart syndrome...among other things. I wish you well! The time before surgery (or while waiting for a decision to be made about it in my case) is a scary time!
