I found out I was pregnant Labor Day 2013 when I was watching my 2 year old watch a dolphin show and I was so happy I wanted to cry. I was nearly 4 weeks along, after having a blighted ovum and having a D&C February 2013.

My pregnancy went as an old wive's tale. I was sick daily until 20 weeks and then I had heartburn until I delivered.

I had to have regular ultrasounds with a specialist because my son had complications and we had to make sure she didn't. We found she was a girl at 12weeks, 15weeks and 18weeks. At 15 weeks I decided on her name. My husband asked me about the name Lainee and I chose Alexis for her middle name.

Monday, November 11th, I started coughing. I thought I was getting another sinus infection like a few weeks prior. By Friday I was feeling bad, left work early. Over the weekend I barely ate because everytime I coughed, I would puke. By Monday, I called in for work and my dr for meds. My chest hurt, but we thought it was from coughing so much. The dr prescribed me a z pack over the phone.

Tuesday I had a regular follow up ultrasound with my specialist. I still felt horrible. Just the walk from the car to the hospital drug the air out of me. I only made it to my vitals, they sent me to triage.

In triage, they tested me for the flu. It was negative. They found out at that point I needed to be admitted. I had pneumonia. Lainee, through all of this was still perfect and under no stress.

I got admitted to L&D November 19th. That's the last day I remember. I've been told the rest of my story..

I had to have my lungs cleaned out November 22nd because they filled up fast with fluid. They sedated me and started and that's when I started to go downhill. They decided they needed to get Lainee out then. They tried to wheel me to the OR but I coded and they did an emergency c section(vertically) right there in my sicu room. I was fine after.

Lainee was on O2 for a few days and an iv for a few days. She was breathing on her own and only need the billie lights for 2 days. She weighed 3lbs 3oz, dropping to 2lbs 12oz after losing her water weight. She was born at 29 weeks and 2 days.

By sunday, I was bad again. They did a test Friday when I delivered for H1N1, Monday it had came back positive. They sedated me and put me into a medically induced coma, on a ventilator, a trache, and 8 ivs, where I gained 76lbs in fluid blowing up to over 200lbs. They gave my husband no survival rate, the only thing I had on my side was my age. I remained in that coma until December 23rd.

When I woke up, I couldn't talk. And I couldn't imagine what I was hearing when I was told I had my baby and I was asleep for a month and a half. But I progressed quickly, moving to pcu after the new year started. I was no longer sick, but I was still weak. They removed all my chest tubes and trache over the next few weeks. I finally got to see Lainee after a month and a half. Couldn't hold her until a week after that. And when I hold her I have to gown/glove up thanks to a bacterial colonization I have in my blood. But it's worth it.

January 16th I moved to a rehabilitation center to help get my strength back so I can do what I did before all this happened. My goal to be home is Lainee's due date, February 5th. For both of us. She just has to master bottle feeding, I need to walk and get my strength back in my body.

All this happened because I didn't get my flu shot. I didn't get one with my son and got lucky I never got sick. Sorry this is so long. But I had to tell it. I'm new to being a preemie mom, and it's a scary thought. As of yesterday, Lainee weighs 6lbs 3oz. She's still in the nicu and is almost 2 months old.

What an incredible story. I am so glad you are both on the mend! I wish I could share your story with everyone. I have friend who is currently pregnant and refuses all vaccines for herself and her children. I respect her choices but am so afraid for them.

I think there genuinely must be an increased risk as in my whole life ive only had flu once and that was when I had my son... must be so confusing to wake up and be told that, good luck

Im sorry but your friend is not very wise... I nearly died of pnumococcal due to not being vaccinated (it wasn't standard protocol back then) I nearly died and was in a medical coma for weeks and now have life long kidney damage and regular infection, stones and sepsis (sepsis that I have nearly died multiple times as a result even 12 years on)

Im all for parents being in charge of what happens with there kids but this is one area that should be legally mandatory :growlmad:

Oh my cryssie, hugs hugs hugs. What an ordeal, I'm so sorry for everything you went through. Hoping you and your sweet LO are doing well tonight...

Wow. I'm so glad you and your daughter are going to be ok. I hope you don't mind but I am going to post a link to your story in the second tri forums - it is quite an eye opener! Lots of luck with getting home xxx

oh gosh hun your story made me cry, it must have been just insane. Glad you're feeling better now and hope little Lainee will come home soon enough for you. I can't even imagine what you've been through. How is your two year old handling this? it must have been tough on LO and on all your family. :hugs:

Update: Lainee got released from the nicu on the 4th of February. We're all back home and doing well! Please do share my story not many pregnant women/babies survive this mess.

That's brilliant! Glad you are now all home xx
