On nothing but 2 paracetamols and gas and air!!
So it all happened totally unexpectedly and very quickly. I had very slight contractions Monday night - more like mild period pains and was hopeful that something was starting. But then Tuesday during the day it all stopped. Contractions came back Tuesday night and were about 7 to 10 minutes apart all night. I was quite tired by Wednesday morning but all contractions had stopped and i was due to have a sweep that day. Went into hospital to say had contractions all night which had gone and wanting to go ahead with the sweep.
Sweep was ok - she did ten pushes in and as soon as I stood up here was quite a lot of blood on the floor.
I was feeling tired but ok so we went out for lunch. Contractions started coming back quite strong and were about 10 minutes apart. They got stronger and stronger all night. At the sweep I was told that I was 1 cm dilated so I was convinced that it was not time to go in yet.
By Thursday morning I was struggling to breathe through the contractions, was screaming (although not very loudly) with the pain and was biting my hand and clutching husband's hand through contractions.
Thursday morning I was feeling exhausted and in a lot of pain. Contractions were about 6/7 minutes apart. I then started feeling sick and threw up. Also started leaking weird liquid. Could not really work out whether it was pee or waters and had no idea what waters look like.
Decided to go in to get checked and said to husband waters had broken. Then changed my mind and decided waters could not have broken.
Managed to text my mum - did not want to call as was screaming. She had a huge go at me for not being in hospital and said I was putting baby at risk.
Then my husband started panicking and asked if I had felt baby move recently which I had not. So he was concerned sth was very wrong and literally pushed me out of the door to the car.
I was so angry cos couldn't walk with the pain and took ages to get out of the house/ into the car. Had to totally recline the seat & was screaming my head off on the 5 minute drive to the hospital.
Had to then get out of the car & walk into labour ward up stairs & into lift. In fact when the lift turned up I could not get in cos was having a contraction!
Went straight to labour ward with contractions now 3 minutes apart. They said it could be a little weight and I was lying across reception room chairs. Luckily got seen by a midwife 3 minutes later and she did an examination to check how dilated I was. I was 4cms in established labour and my waters broke as she was examining me!!
Got gas and air and felt much better. About 15 minutes later had to go to my birthing suit. That was total agony. In fact as soon as I let go of the gas and air I could feel the most horrendous pain and could do nothing but scream. It was really really intense.
I was quite out on gas and air within half an hour. Was standing leaning over the bed and was ok as long as the midwife did not take away the gas and air to ask if I was having a contraction. At this point I could not tell whether it was a contraction or not - just one excruciating pain which got unbearable if I did not breathe in gas and air.
About 2 hours in they said I had to go to the bathroom - this was 3.30.
I was so annoyed with my husband and the midwife because a walk would have finished me off. I also felt that everything was pressing down and if i had a wee I would also poo myself and I did not want my husband seeing me poo and wipe my bum!!
Well I could not stop it - I weed on the loo and pooed and the could not get off the loo!! There was a birthing pool in the bathroom but I could not think clearly and just wanted the pain to stop!
Midwife started shouting that if I did not stop pushing baby would be born on the toilet!!
This was 3.45 and I managed to get off the loo and back onto the bed. Although they made me lie on my side and I was screaming at my husband to leave me alone as I was in pain. Apparently I was totally out and my eyes were rolling back in my head!!
Then at 4.15 they said I was fully dilated and ready to push. There were 8 people round my bed - midwives and the dr and my husband all telling me to push. It felt like my insides were being torn in half and this enormous weight pressing down.
I was pushing like mad and then the dr said if I did not have baby out in ten minutes I would have to have suction as baby was distressed.
I was pushing as hard as I could but she was not coming out fast enough so had an episiotomy and ventouse for the last ten seconds. Then she was out
Waters broke at 1.30 - baby was born at 5.05
The cord broke & had to have an operation to manually remove half the placenta...
She was 7 pounds and is perfect
