I've just given birth to my second son at 35+1 after a slow starting and fast finishing labour!

He's been taken off for iv antibiotics and my husband has gone with him to hold him in skin to skin while that drips through the canula.

I'm in delivery suite having a drug pumped in to clamp my cervix down to avoid another pph.

Been told they may admit my son dependin on his blood sugar levels. Not overly keen on that.

He had a reasonable attempt at latching on before he went off. His temp was normal and his breathing fine.

This is all very new to me and I'd love to hear any advice

Doc has just been in as I write. His blood sugar level is 1.1 so they are giving him sugar water.

I want to establish breast feeding. How does this happen with a preemie?

Doc also said his temp is low so he's going in an incubator. He's not having skin to skin right now, just wrapped in blankets and being held by daddy.

Sorry this is a bit of a brain dump. It's all so new and I don't really know what I'm doing!

Congratulations on your lil guy!!

We didnt go exclusive breastfeeding untill we came home at 11 days but we started trying the day after he was born. The rest of the time I pumped/hand expressed and that was given to him by his feeding tube. My guys midwives said they dont normally get the suck swallow reflex until 36 weeks but my son was good to go from the beginning. The rest of the time he was given donated breastmilk as I didnt want him on formula if we could help it.

My son also got iv antibiotics as a precaution and was in a hot cot (normal cot with a heated mattress) for a few days x

Congratulations kanga. Sorry I can't help but I wanted to wish you all well. xxx

congratulations hun!
in my NICU we expressed as normal and they took the milk, if baby is being NG tube fed they'll keep the milk and feed it through tube if need be.. but if he is latching they should let you try also xx

Congratulations!!!

I can't believe you've had a natural delivery.

I'm guessing he was growth restricted?

I can't offer much help as my story is a little different. We lost out first because of iugr so with our ds was having regular growth scans. At 33+1 (3lb 11oz) they decided it was too much of a risk for him to stay inside so had an elcs. He was quickly shown to us and then whipped off down to nicu where they put him on cpap for a night (i think) he was too small and weak to feed so I expressed while he was in hospital, at first it was given through a tube, when he got a bit bigger and stronger I fed him at least once a day when I could be there for feed times other wise they gave him my milk from a bottle.

Hope you get him home with you soon. Well done! X
