Hi ladies, had my wee boy Harrison (Sonny) on Wednesday 21.11.12 :cloud9: - here’s how it went

So on Monday morning, after dtd the night before, I got up at 6am with some very mild tightenings. OH was getting ready for work so I got my candles on and sat on my ball for a couple of hrs. Tightenings never really got any stronger, but they didn’t fizzle out either. Sent OH to his work and just sorta went about my day. I had a sweep booked that day for 3pm, so I went to that full of hope that these tightenings were working magic and that I was gona be 3 cm dilated... umm no chance unfortunately! My cervix was very posterior and I was one cm dilated (but probably only because I already had given birth, according to the midwife ). She managed to do the sweep anyway, but never gave me much hope that it would work! She said he wasn’t even fully engaged and gave me a bishops score of 4 - cue me almost in hysterics and looking forward to being induced on my little girls birthday! Anyway, immediately after the sweep, the pains began to get stronger... not to the point I needed to breathe through them or anything, but definitely more noticeable.
That night, the pains were ongoing, but not very regular. Went to bed and managed to get some sleep between them. The whole time I was thinking about when to get my DD picked up as I didn’t really know if we were on or what was happening haha. Got up the next morning, pains were just about the same but definitely not fizzling out. Was in two minds about sending OH to work, but didn’t think I could look after DD myself with the contractions. They were coming anything between 8-10 mins apart and lasting around a minute but they didn’t seem to be getting much stronger. I just sat with my candles on bouncing on my ball through them- worked a treat. At about 12 noon, got my step mum to come get DD as they were getting a bit sorer and I needed OH to rub my back when I was getting them. The whole time I was thinking argh if this is a false alarm i’m gona feel like a total idiot!! We were timing the contractions, but they didn’t seem to be getting closer together but they were def getting stronger. The pain was really all in my back and right down low on my bump, and everything I was reading was sort of pointing to false labour! I was terrified of going up to the hospital and being sent away and told I wasn’t even in labour yet! So kept putting my OH off when he was telling me to phone. At about 6pm, I started having to sort of walk through the contractions, could feel some pressure in my bum with them and after each one I had to pee- lovely! :haha: I went for a bath, but didn’t really get on with it so came back downstairs and put on Game of Thrones and watched a couple of episodes just laying on the couch and getting up with each contraction. They were definitely getting much stronger, but the time between them still wasn’t regular going from anywhere between 5 and 8 mins, so I still wasn’t convinced I was in labour! At about 9.30pm, they started to get worse and worse and I really couldn’t deal with the pain anymore. I remember just walking up and down shaking my head when I got one. Phoned the midwife unit and spoke utter balls to the women on the other end, totally couldn’t focus on what she was asking me... It was then I think I kind of realised in myself that things were happening! Went and got dressed (contractions immediately started getting stronger after we were told to go up to the hosp), jumped in the car to hosp which luckily was just round the corner.
Got there and realised we had forgotten my notes!! So Oh had to go home and get them. By this time the contractions were coming thick and fast. Was really pleased to see that it was a lovely midwife who I had met before that was on =) She said we were to go into the lounge area to sit, and after an hour she would check me to see where we were. Got to the lounge and she changed her mind and decided to check me straight away. I was absolutely petrified that she was gona say I wasn’t dilating and send me home– low and behold I was 7 cm- thank the lord!! Honestly, never been so relieved! Got into the pool room and got me some gas and air :cloud9: and sat on the ball while they filled the pool. Got in the pool at about 11.15pm, which was amazing. I couldn’t decide whether the gas was making it better or worse, so sort of abandoned it after a bit. The contractions were very very intense now and I must have been in transition as I kept thinking (and saying) i can’t bloody do this!! Haha! OH and midwife were very supportive, telling me how well I was doing-just what I needed to hear. After about half an hour I started to feel the urge the push. I asked the midwife if I was allowed and she said of course. I remember saying ok i’m just gona do what my body tells me. I duno, I guess because no one had checked me to say I was 10cm... it was like I was waiting for permission to be allowed to do it! Too many birthing shows i think :haha: But our bodies know best! During the next contraction, I couldn’t stop myself pushing even if i wanted to- the relief was amazing!!! The midwife had her wee mirror out and said the baby was just right there. She wasn’t sure if my waters had gone yet as it can be quite hard to tell in the pool. During the next contraction, I felt a pop and there were my waters. Unfortunately there was meconium so they made me get out of the pool and were going to call the paeds. I went over to a mat on the floor (could totally feel his head almost hanging out) and my wee Sonny was born two pushes later at 12.10am before they got the chance to call the docs. Came out with one hand up beside his head, the little menace!! Only had a 1st degree tear though, so didn’t need any stitches.
In all it was an amazing (but very intense) experience and sooo different to my 1st , where i was pushing for 3 hrs. I was really quite shell- shocked for a few days though as it seemed to happen really quickly and because i was only in the hosp for a couple of hours before he was born! He was 8lbs 4 too, after being told due to a growth scan he was going to be tiny! So take these things with a pinch of salt!! And don’t wait for regular contractions as they don’t always happen!!
So happy with my lil guy :cloud9: Thanks for reading, feels good to get it out!! (not the baby :haha:) :flower:
