Wow!! What a feeling!
I am still on cloud nine after achieving my home birth!
Our yellow bump turned pink on Monday night 10th March at 20:48 after a quick calm labour. Not going to say it was not painful or hard at times lol, but it could not have gone any better, and it was exactly what I needed to get over the trauma of my previous induced forceps birth 3 years previously.
So Monday night, T+10 and I was getting anxious about my impending appointment with the consultant as I was declining induction. I had a sweep that morning, my second one that week. The first one gave me strong irregular contractions that fizzled out to nothing and do far I had nothing to indicate labour was closer this time.
Sitting on the floor with my 3yo playing castles at 19:05, I had my first contraction. It caught me by surprise how strong it was. Hubby was like are you okay do we need to call the midwife . I had another contraction 10mins later then 3/4 mins thereafter, and each one was lasting about 50 seconds each, it was all so quick, I was pretty sure that it could not be real. However the pain was becoming worse and I needed to get my youngest son's out of the house just in case.
Hubby took the boys to their big sisters house at about 19:40 whilst I got my eldest son to get the pool and kit into the living room, then I phoned the midwife at 19:45. I was still not convinced it was the really deal, aswith my last sweep I had contractions for several hours but they stopped. I spoke to the midwife, who after hearing me breath through two contractions said she would call the on call team and get them to come out to assess the situation. I was still worried it would be a false alarm lol
I then went to the loo and noticed I was bleeding ever so slightly, not enough to be concerned but enough to think oh yeah this is really happening!
Contractions were now 2/3 mins apart and lasting over a minute, the pool was filling and I was desperate to get in. In the brief interludes between contractions i was changing into my tankini, putting down towels, getting the baby stuff ready to go, putting on some music etc then as soon as the water temp was okay I got into the water. At this point it was 20:20 and briefly I was afraid I had got in the water to soon because I had such a pain relieving few minutes and then thought oh no, hope they have not stalled lol. But they had not!! Five mins later I had immense pressure and felt a bubble down below and a pop and gush as my waters spontaneously went. Said to hubby, water have gone and he said good no going back now then lol! The fluid was lovely and clear.
Five mins later the midwives arrived. I asked for gas and air, which they quickly set up for me and in between contractions they listened to baby heart beat, was 136 and perfect, no other interventions were done at all.
Felt the need to push and felt baby move down, the midwife said oh I can see the head another push head was delivered and third push baby was born. 20:48 only 1 hour and 43 mins since my first contraction! And only about half an hour since I thought it was real lol!!
The midwife helped me to bring the baby up the front to my chest, where I looked to see her sex. Had a double check, as did not want to get it wrong lol! Hubby is still in shock at the fact we have a wee girl lol, he was sure it would be a boy lol! Her cord was around her neck and arm but the midwife quickly and silently unwrapped it. Took here about 30 seconds to breath but her colour and tone were good and she was still attached to the cord anyway. She is perfect. Apgars were 9,10 and 10. Minimal blood loss, only 100ml and I have a small tear which never needed any sutures.
She is breast feeding like a pro and is the most chilled out baby, eats and sleeps and I feel overwhelmed by the whole thing! It was truly the most amazing experience!
And hubby is in awe of me and my birthing ability lol, so much so he tells people in the streeet lol, he is so proud, it makes my heart melt
