Hiya, im sorry if ive posted this in the wrong thread but my friend had her first ivf and the embryo transfered last wednesday...but this wednesday and thursday she started bleeding, with clots and back ache, she txt me saying she had lost it and was devestated as you would be...but she took a pregnancy test yesterday anyway because that is what the doctor told her, and it was positive, she rang them and they said to do another one and again it is positive...so is she pregnant? what was the bleeding all about? Im thinking maybe the embryo did attatch long enough to release the hormone but then she misscarried? im so confused for her, shes been trying for years and really deserves this just like all of you do, i dont know what to say to her!

:hugs: Thankyou for reading! xXx

Well shes taken numerous tests and it is still :bfp: The dr has told her that she is pregnant but gotta wait untill 17th for scan to make sure it is not ectopic, im still confused as to why she had bleeding and clots, i just hope when she goes for the scan everything will be ok!

I was told that, just like in any other pregnancy, an IVF pregnancy in its early days can cause bleeding. There are women who pass clots only to find out they are still pregnant. The hormone detected in pregnancy apparently halves every day after a miscarriage.

If her embryo was only transferred last wednesday and she took that test on wednesday/thursday then she was the equivalent of probably about 10 or 11dpo. She probably (and, as hard as it is) needs to wait until she is at 14dpo. If the test is stronger, she is pregnant. If it's not then it might have been a 'chemical'...

They also recommend, in IVF, not to test until 14 days past transfer only because there can be false results.

Ok, ill tell her to wait a few more days and see what happens then! x

There can only be false positives if she has been on a support drug with hCG, such as pregnyl.

The exact same thing happend to me my first IVF cycle.

I bled VERY heavily with lots and lots of clots a few days before my beta. I was made to have my beta anyway (didn't POAS) and it was 15, so they thought that something had happened but that i'd lost it and they got me to go back for another beta a few days later where they expected hCG to be 0, but it was 60. My little bean tried to hang on but a few days later my hCG dropped and I lost it.

In all honesty it is likely that the same thing will happen to your friend, but it is possible that it can still be a viable pregnancy.

She should go for bloodwork to get the exact beta reading which will give more info as to what is happening in there, and then continued follow up blood work for the next few days. This is the only way they will know for sure.

Bleeding can be perfectly normal. So, I agree, she needs to go in and be getting blood levels drawn. That is the best measure.

The HCG trigger shot that is given about 35 hours before the retrieval takes a while to get out of the system. Take a pregnancy test while this is still in the system and you'll get a positive result.

She may also have had a chemical pregnancy, a nice name for a miscarriage usually just days after implantation.

Spotting is normal, a full-out flow with clots is not. She needs to hope for the best but expect the worst on this one. If she has a viable pregnancy, she'll be falling into a very tiny minority with the clotting not signaling no pregnancy.
