My friend is newly pregnant. She is almost 1.5 months, I guess. This is her 2nd child.. I was asking her how her pregnancy was and stuff, she was it's ok.. then asked her if she is taking folic acid and other vitamins..she was like "no"

I asked her why and then she was like "I only took it when I was 7 months up until delivery, my doc never told me to take it before"

What's this?? I was like ,

Have not heard of this before. All advice I have read suggests to take it before you conceive and up to the first three months of pregnancy.

Even when I was TTC #1 14 yrs ago (aged 19) I was told to take folic acid when TTC and for the first tri.

Folic acid is really important. It is supposed to help prevent things like spina bifada is it not?

I thought it was the 1st trimester that folic acid was really imporatant for they even recommend you start taking it before ttc!

it is really inportant,i take folic acid everyday, and will continue to take it when i get my bfp.my friend found out shes pregnant,at a guess about 6 weeks, and the doctor put her straight onto folic acid

I reckon your friend's doctor made a boo boo and someone is covering it up.

If you do a search on the internet of folic acid, there's heaps of advice there and it's generally to take it for as much as 3 months before conception (if possible) and thereafter. Very important for fetal development of spinal cord.

Don't tell your friend though, she might worry and it's too late for her to change anything.

I think you're right - I've been taking if for 6 months BEFORE TTC and will carry on til the Dr says otherwise!

If she is eating a balanced diet she will probably be taking enough anyway, the recommendation is there as some don't eat balanced diets.

Yes, you get folic acid in a well balanced diet. But you are recommended to take it before getting preg and during your early preg as the spin is forming and such....weird doc! Maybe she just forgot about him or someone mentioning it. I am sure things with her preg will be fine. There still is a chance of birth defects even when you try to do everything right and try to prevent them...
