My mom flew into town on March 8th - we picked her up at the airport and took her out for dinner, came home and got her settled, and all went to bed.
On March 9th, I woke up for no apparent reason at 4am. I spent some time trying to go back to sleep, then got up and went online. Poked around on my mommy forums and on Tumblr. At 5am, I had a for-real contraction and started to wonder if maybe this was it.
I had another contraction roughly half an hour later, and another about half an hour after that. I wasnt really timing things though, as Id been contracting on and off over the past few weeks and didnt want to get my hopes up.
At 7:30 or so, Molly woke up so I got her dressed and ready for the day. We went out to the living room and said good morning to my mom, and then Mom and I got ready too. Around 8:30 I woke Teacherman up, and we all headed out to meet his parents and brother for breakfast at a local pancake place.
I was still having contractions and I knew they were getting slightly closer together - 20 minutes or so apart instead of 30. But I concentrated on ignoring them and enjoyed our visit and breakfast with my in-laws. I had an AWESOME spinach omelette and home fries
After breakfast, Molly was tired and we decided to take my mom for a drive around Honolulu. I skipped a few scenic points in favor of resting in the car and continued to have contractions that were indeed slowly and steadily getting closer and harder,
We got home around 2pm, and Mom and I started on some laundry - I felt like it NEEDED to get done!
As we did that, the contractions got closer and closer. Teacherman had gone for a nap when we got home from our drive and he got up around 3:15 or so. Mom and I told him my contractions were about 10 minutes apart then.
Then they were 8 minutes apart - and then WHAM. They were 3 minutes apart. Not even kidding - I had two that were 8 minutes apart and Mom said Okay, 8 minutes.
I was watching the clock, thinking I had 8 minutes to relax, and then boom. Contraction that I had to really focus on in 3 minutes. They came hard and fast after that and I could feel my mood shifting from fairly relaxed to more flustered and a bit confused.
My mom pointed that out to TM, and he helped me pack up my hospital bag. I remember thinking it was REALLY IMPORTANT that my mom have a phone (she didnt bring hers) and the apartment key, since shed be staying with Molly and finishing the laundry while we went to the hospital.
TM called his family and let them know that we were going to the hospital in labor, and asked them to bring Molly and my mom dinner (wed been planning to go to their place that evening).
We left for the hospital and arrived at L&D around 4pm. I was having contractions all the way there (the car SUCKED) and in the hallway, etc. A nurse asked if I wanted a wheelchair from the entrance of L&D to the labor room but I said no.
When the nurse who was taking care of me (Deanna, she was great) was booking us in, she told us that the midwife on the floor then was Connie - my favorite midwife ever who Id seen a handful of times throughout my pregnancy. I hadnt even dared to hope that whoever was attending on the L&D floor when I went in would be someone I knew- let alone my favorite midwife!! That was really good news.
When Connie came in and checked me, I was 6cm dilated. Also good news.
They hooked me up with a hep lock on my hand, and monitors on my belly to watch Zions heart rate and my contractions. We told them I did not want any pain meds or anything.
Contractions were coming hard and FAST and I started having a headache in the middle of my forehead with each one (probably from dehydration). TM pressed his hand on my fore head and that helped a bit.
Then I started to feel a TON of pressure so Deanna called for Connie to come check me again. They broke my water and I was 8 cm - more pressure and Connie said they were going to get everything ready because the baby was going to be here any second! I remember seeing the clock and it was about 5:15.
Then she said I could push with the next contraction. Oh man - I was so ready. I know I yelled when I was pushing and within seconds she said she could see his head. A few more pushes and he was OUT already - time of birth was 5:43pm.
He was put on my tummy and they started rubbing him but then Connie looked right at me and said Holly, we need to take baby over to the warmer - everything is okay. Well bring him back in a few minutes.
They whisked him over to the warmer across the room and I told TM to go and take pictures.
Connie told me later that Zion had the cord wrapped around his neck AND his body, and it was very tight. But within seconds we heard his first cry and moments later he was back in my arms.
My little boy.
We got a good hour of skin-to-skin and he bumped his way over to my right breast and even latched on for a few minutes during that time. I was so impressed!
TM called the moms and let them know that Zion Joseph Kealoha had been in a BIG BIG HURRY and was earth-side already
Then we got moved to the recovery room on the other side of the ward - nurses actually applauded as I was wheeled over Id given birth before any of the nurses whod been on duty when I arrived, went off shift for the evening!!
Deanna introduced me to the RN whod be taking care of me for a few more hours in recovery, and TM and I ate dinner (a cheeseburger, some salad, and a piece of haupia (coconut) cake). I felt a little sick after that because my uterus was cramping and contracting still, but the RN brought me Motrin and I started feeling better.
TM went home to get my phone charger and a few other things, and I settled in to get to know my little boy!
He was nursing like a champ all that night and has been ever since.
We went home when he was 2 days old.
By 6 days old he was 7 ounces over his birth weight!! Hes my happy chill laid back little man. I cant believe how relaxed and awesome he is! Being his mama is a complete joy.
Molly adores him and is my Big Helper Girl - and now Im mama of two! Two perfect little creatures to love and raise. I am so, so incredibly blessed
