Well Harrison is 4 weeks old now, and its gone so quickly, this is the first chance I've had to write my birth story, hopefully remember the most of it :)

At 1:45am on the 28th of March, my waters went with a gush, baby kicked and all I felt was a gush! I said to my hubby that I thought my waters had gone (only 1 1/2 hrs earlier he'd taken a sleeping tablet as he had trouble sleeping and was just starting to nod off!).
I had the initial fear that I'd wet myself but being that I'd been up and down to the loo all night I didnt think it would be possible lol I leapt out of bed to check and by the time I got to the toilet my pj trousers were soaked!
I asked hubby to ring triage, which he did and told the midwife that his waters had broken lol (I added this on to my this is it in 3rd trimester whilst in labour lol) I could hear the midwife laughing on the phone from the loo. We were told to make our way in to get checked, no panic to get in but to make our way when we were ready.
Next phone calls were to my mum and dh rang my mother in law, they were both a tad surprised to get the call, being that I was only 36 + 4. Cue lots of excitement though :)
I couldn't believe it when we got outside though, it had been snowing and the ground was white! Rather wobbly waddle to the car, but we made it to the hospital okay, both in a bit of shock that this was it now and 2 were going to be becoming 3!

When we got to the hospital we didn't have long to wait and got a room straight away, I was put on the monitor to check baby and see if anything was happening contraction wise. I was surprised to hear that I was having tightening's, which I couldn't feel. The pad that I'd put on was checked and it was confirmed it was defiantly my waters. Because at my last midwife appt too she couldn't confirm that baby was head down, I had an ultrasound done to make sure, it was a relief to hear that yep he was the correct way for the exit. The doctor examined me too, which was the one part that I was really dreading, it was uncomfortable, but over quite quickly thankfully, he confirmed that I was 3cm which was brilliant news, but obv not classed as active labour, so I was allowed home. Had instructions to go back in later that afternoon to get monitored and an appt on the Friday to get things kick started if nothing had started itself.
On route home hubby was in need of a maccy d's, so we had a pit stop, was also thinking it could be a very long day. I just had fries, as I'd remembered from the antenatal classes not to have anything too heavy.
When we got home hubby went off to bed to catch up on some sleep and I went for a bath to chill and relax (plus shave legs and tidy up lol). Was way too excited to even think about going to bed, adrenalin and the realization that I was going to be a mummy sooner rather than later had me almost hyper lol
When I got out the bath I felt a bit uncomfy and crampy so rang triage to ask advice, I was told it was early labour pains and to have another bath/keep active/busy. I started ironing the things for my hospital bag (which wasn't packed) and finished packing the bag. Whilst ironing the cramp started getting a bit worse and I started timing it on my phone, was going between 8mins, 5mins, 2mins, 1min, all over the shop. I had another bath and surfed bnb whilst in the bath - updating my post from there lol
While in the bath I noticed a shift in how the cramps were it had gone from uncomfy to building to a peak then dropping away, i had a vision of it being like a mountain peak as they were happening, I asked hubby to start timing them at this point, they were coming every 3-4 mins. Hubby rang triage again who wanted to speak to me, handily amid a contraction. When she heard me she said to make our way in.

This time when we got in, and I was examined (this time was really uncomfy) I was 6cm, it was only about 10:50am, which I was really pleased to hear, I felt that was quite quick. I was told I was being admitted to labour ward, and a midwife was coming down to get me. Thankfully she had a wheel chair with her, I was worried I was going to have to walk up the stairs lol thankfully though we were taking the lift. She asked on route what I wanted in the way of pain relief and to be honest all thoughts of pain free went out the window lol I asked for diamorphine right away. As soon as I was in my room as well I was given gas & air. That took a bit of getting used to breathing, a bit light headed too, but once I got the hang of it, it was fine.
The room was fantastic, own toilet/shower, and a lovely view of the lake outside (1st floor).
Got comfy on the bed, again being mobile was out the window, I just wanted to lie down. Both of our mobiles were going mental with messages with everyone asking how things were going, facebook updates as well. One post I laughed at when I re-read it - I was out of it on diamorphine and g & a and was on about how off my face I felt lol
Hubby got comfy in a chair by my side and gave me water on demand, I think I got pretty bossy and demanding when I wanted water but did apologise afterwards lol
I remember with the contractions I kept pressing my feet to the end of the bed, funny what you focus on to get through them. I had a midwife and student midwife with me and the student midwife was fantastic, so was the midwife but the student was so encouraging. At some point I got to 10cm, I think it was around 3pm, I felt really emotional and was fighting off tears, the feeling of this really is it now hit. I was told I'd have an hour of pushing before they intervened. Pushing was the strangest sensation, everyone says you'll know but I kept saying to them I don't now if this is right but I feel like I really need a poo, unsurprisingly that was it, and to push. It was hard going, I did say a few times I couldn't do it, I couldn't keep the pushing going and kept running out of breath. Then the contractions slowed down, so I was put on a drip to get them back up. The worst part of that was them trying to get an iv in my hand, it took 3 attempts, one hand was bruised for a week afterwards! Eventually the contractions returned, the student midwife was so encouraging telling me to keep going he wasn't far off being born. Near the end the doctor came in and I heard epistomy (sp) mentioned, which gave me the drive to push with everything I had to get him out. Thankfully I did before she got her scalpel out!
When he was put on my stomach I fell in love, he was just looking up at me, wide eyed, didn't cry just stared. He had a wee hat put on and towel over him, and we had a while like that. Then my hubby had a hold, proudest I've ever seen him looking :)
Unfortunately I had a 2nd degree tear, and the doc stitching was a grumpy moo, it was rather stingy even after pain injection, but with gas and air I got through it.
Harrison was weighed and after our bets of what weight he'd be we were all wrong! He was a healthy 7lbs 2.5oz. Dread to think what he'd have been at full term!

We've had a few feeding issues with him, and mucus/snuffly nose which have resulted in a couple of trips back to hospital. He lost 11% of his birth weight so was readmitted but has thankfully started thriving and got to grips with his feeding now. Still has a really snuffly nose but other than that is doing fantastically and was 8lbs when he was weighed the other day :-D

Recovery for me has been good, straight forward and the only ongoing pain now is my coccyx (which is pretty sore/uncomfortable).

Absolutely love being a mummy, my little man has stolen my heart <3 xx
