This will be super long; I love re-reading my 1st two birth stories and reminiscing but wish I'd added more details as I forgot lots, so this will be detailed! I'll put a short and sweet summary at the end so feel free to skip ahead ![Smile :) :)](/styles/default/xenforo/smilies/icon_smile.gif)
On Monday evening I went to my FMAU for monitoring as LO wasn't moving much, I'd been experiencing gradual reduction of movement for the last 4 weeks but LO always seemed well at my MW appointments. But for the last couple of days LO was moving less and was hard to rouse with the usual tricks like having a cold drink and bump prodding. I also had a little bleed in the morning which I thought could be the start of my show but as I'm rd- thought it best t get checked. I got monitored, had my BP and pulse checked and then saw the doctor as I was tachycardic. LO was a bit sleepy on the monitor but the MW seemed pretty happy. I went to L&D for a doctor to do an internal to check about the bleeding and she couldn't see any more blood which was good. She then said that as this was my 2nd time being checked for reduced movements and not being completely reassured by the monitor either time they might want to induce me. Not what I wanted to hear; of course I said I would do whatever was best for LO but I wanted desperately to have the chance to go naturally. The doctor spoke to the registrar who said that she wanted to induce but that I could go home that evening and come back on Tuesday morning. A MW did a sweep, my cervix was high and off to the side, she had trouble reaching it; it felt like a really bad sign!
Tuesday morning at 10:30 DH and I arrived at FMAU. It was very busy and we waited for an hour before they said it would be about 20 more minutes so we went to the cafe where I had the first of many delicious brownies
. Then we went back, I was put on the monitor (LO looked great and was dancing around) and had my anti-d (they couldn't do it the night before as there was a problem with my paperwork). I was examined, the MW could only get a fingertip in. I had the pessary inserted at 1.30pm and was then moved onto the ward. DH and I spent most of the afternoon walking around and sitting in the sitting room. We had a nice time just hanging out and the time passed quickly. About 5pm I was getting a lot of pressure down below, walking was hard as it felt like LO might fall out
. At about 8pm DH went home; he could have stayed (they'd changed the rules since my 1st induction 4 years ago and now had a comfy recliner for dads to sleep on) but I wanted him to be at home for our LO's when they woke in the night and to make sure the morning was as normal as possible for them. A little before 10pm I started having contractions and started timing them. They were 4-5 minutes apart. Going to the toilet was so hard, the pressure made sitting on the toilet horrible. At 12am I asked for paracetamol so that I could get some sleep. I slept 12.30-2am but kept half waking with the contractions. I started timing contractions again at At 2.30am and they were 2-3.5 minutes apart. At 3.30am I asked for codeine hoping that would help me sleep better. The MW decided to put me on the monitor and also examine me. LO was responding well to the contractions. I was only 2cm, wah!
. It felt like such a kick in the teeth to have made so little progress with all the pressure an contractions. The MW said that the pessary had likely aggravated me as I was very swollen and my skin was a bit inflamed. But she reinserted the pessary as it wasn't hyper stimulating me and I was desperate to do whatever I could to avoid going on the drip (cannula's are my nightmare), although it seemed inevitable I'd need it at that point.
I went back to bed and slept 4.30-6ish. I spent the morning reading and having a long bath which helped with the contractions. DH was going to come back in for 9:30 after taking DS to school but DD was being fussy so I asked him to take her to the park as my Dad was looking after her and wasn't so confident taking her out. I went on the monitor, again LO responded well to the contractions (they were still 2-3 minutes apart then) which were registering stronger and had me hoping that labour might actually start and I'd dilate enough to beat the drip at 1.30pm! I thought that if I got to 3-4cm they might break my waters and see if that got kick started stuff.
DH arrived a little after 11. I had 2 strong contractions 1 minute apart before he arrived, I was kneeling on the bed and trying not to make noise through them as there was another lady and her partner in the bed opposite me. DH arrived half way through the 2nd contraction and started rubbing my back which really helped with the pain (I was feeling the pain half in my front half in my back, as I did with my other 2, both of whom were back to back; I didn't have this ones position confirmed). I went to the toilet, the pessary fell out and I had my bloody show. From then the contractions really kicked up and I thought that this really might be it. They were about 1-1.5 minutes apart and the pain was still quite strong between contractions, I had to breath through it and I was moaning through the peaks. I asked DH to buzz the MW and asked for codeine. She said she'd go and see if I could use the birthing unit rather than L&D (I'd been OK'ed to use it by my consultant but due to being induced it wasn't certain I'd be able to use it and was up to the MW's on at the time) and then come and check me soon; I wanted to be checked then because I was feeling like things were happening fast but she left before the contraction ended and I couldn't speak during it. I had 2 more contractions and my waters went, and I asked DH to call the MW back. She came back, examined me and I was 6cm. She quickly went to call L&D, tell them I was coming across and then they wheeled me over on the bed. I was on all fours naked from the waist down with a sheet on me and was a little worried I'd flash everyone in the corridor but was less concerned than I should have been
.
I got into the room (it only took 5 minutes) and got on the gas and air which was such a relief! The MW wanted me to get onto the other bed but I refused to move until I'd had a few good puffs of gas and air to send myself out of it enough to make the move
. I got onto the bed and back on the gas and air, and concentrated on getting loopy
. I was vaguely aware of another MW coming in and saying hi and how she had to be the one to deliver me as she was my MW who I'd been seeing for appointments through my pregnancy. She said she'd examine me and then said something along the lines of not needing to examine me. I said to DH "please don't let them send me back to the ward because even if I'm not dilating I really really think I'm in labour". I didn't realise that the reason she didn't need to examine me was because she could see LO's head
. My MW told me to take some breaths of normal air and I remember looking at the wall and peachy wall with a blue border/divider thing making me think that I was in my old school tutor room despite there being nothing like that there and thinking that maybe I should ease off on the G&A a bit
. Then I felt another contraction coming and decided screw it, I'd get out of it but make sure I'd concentrate on what the MW said enough to not get told off
. I felt LO's head and knew that was what it was and panicked because I knew it was going to hurt like hell to push but that I didn't have a choice so I just puffed away and pushed. I didn't enjoy that part
. I shouted "I really need the toilet!" even though I knew it was LO's head, I wanted to let them know I was pushing without admitting it to myself and freaking myself out. Then LO's head was out and I said to DH "I don't need the toilet any more"
. I guess I delivered LO's body soon after. I heard DH say "it's a girl!"
. She was born at 12.21pm. The MW told me to lean back so they could pass LO through my legs to me but there wasn't much space as she had a short cord and I was still having a strong contraction so I asked them to wait. We turned, I held LO and then DH cut the cord. I was contracting lots and hard, and the MW gave me the injection to make me deliver the placenta as I was bleeding a fair bit with the contractions. Once the placenta was out the bleeding eased a lot and although I was dizzy I was able to hold LO and she latched on for a feed
. My MW left us for skin to skin and LO spent the hour feeding and then got weighed, she was 8lbs 9oz. I had a 1st degree tear, no stitches
. The MW arranged discharge papers and we left at 4.50pm
. Her brother and sister were very pleased to meet her
. Labour was recorded as 1 hour 1 minute long; once it finally got under way it was nice and quick!
So, SHORT VERSION:
Induction, contractions but no labour from 10pm - 11.20am, then a quick 1 hour 1 minute long labour (intense
) resulting in a precious little girl! ![Cloud 9 :cloud9: :cloud9:](/styles/default/xenforo/smilies/cloud9.gif)
. 8lbs 9oz, born at 12.21pm on September 23rd 2015. No name yet, we can't decide who she is!
