I know mine isnt as prem as most of you guys but my son, Max was born at 35 weeks just 2 days ago ( ignore my ticker its wrong ) he is 4lb 9oz he is doing amazing has needed no help at all and they let us home today which we never expected, we at least expected a little neo natal time anyway back to my story.

Max hasnt taken to the breast at all and my milk still hasnt come in so topping up with formula, anyway im finding feeding him difficult as we have to give him help with the bottle and my husband has totally got the hang of it, me how ever i havnt and im getting mad at myself as i think its cus i dont want to hurt him.

Has anyone else had a similar problem and has any advice ? I cried so much last night through it x

Congratulations on the birth of your baby!

What is it you're having trouble with when it comes to bottle feeding him? Also, offer him your breasts as much as possible, and I would also try hand expressing or pumping to help your milk come in if you plan on breastfeeding.

I am not sure the nature of your difficulty but I had 2 that were hard to feed. My oldest daughter was difficult when she was first born. I found that if I fed her just as she was going into a nap, she would eat well but if she was wide awake, it was a struggle to get her to eat. My youngest, my wee preemie, when she came home from the NICU, I had to make a tent over her with a blanket so she couldn't see around her in order to get her to eat. If she could see anything interesting or if there was a lot of noise, she was too distracted to eat. Also, with her, the angle of the nipple made a big difference to how well she ate. She was also a lazy little thing and as soon as she wasn't hungry anymore, she wouldn't make a seal around the nipple so I would have to gently squeeze her cheeks close to her mouth so her lips had to seal around the nipple.

Sorry i didnt make my self clear, he is keeping his tongue on the roof of his mouth n im scared of hurting him wiggling it around etc, i know im being a little bit silly, my first little boy was born at 25 weeks and the few days he was with us i expressed no problem for him, im just taking it a little harder this time that its not as easy, i need to stop compairing the situations x

Ahhh, I hate it when they do that!!! It's hard enough getting that tongue down with a bottle nipple, I can't imagine trying to with breastfeeding. He will eventually learn but I agree with Srrme, you may need to pump in order to get your production going until he figures it out better. Good luck... hugs.

The neonatal nurses who looked after Harry taught me that I wasn't going to break him - they may be early but they are very resilient.

What bottles do you have? Maybe he might like a different nipple style?

With breastfeeding as the girls said get expressing and the milk will come in @ the hospital I did 20 mins after every feed. Also when he opens his mouth help him on - I had to literally hold my son round his neck and shove him on, the midwife said it looks brutal but it isn't.

Try not to beat yourself up, I know I did a lot in the hospital because he wasn't feeding as well as I wanted too but they get there - Harry bow takes both the breast and bottle brilliantly (He just doesn't like giving his wind up lol)

X

P.s as I said in your 3rd tri post my son was born at 34+6 and weighed 4lb 6oz :) so if you want to talk feel free to send me a message x

Thanks girls i really feel so much better now !

Hows your little boy doing thenewmrsb ? Im so lucky Max didnt need nicu time we fully expected him too x

We spent 12 days in hospital getting his feeding sorted n other thAn that he has been perfect!

Growing like a weed :) x

Skylar doesn't take to the breast very well either so I'm exclusively pumping but only managing 4 out of 6 bottles with BM and she knows the difference :haha:

She's started being fussy with the teats too. In NICU she preferred our bought tommee tippee ones and now she prefers the NICU nuk ones, good job I took a few home with me! Luckily they fit right onto the Medela bottles I use to pump so it's actually less hassle.

What teats are you using? I find the nuk ones easier to get her to put her tongue down as they have a flat side. Maybe try those? You can get them on Amazon quite cheaply.

No doubt in a few weeks she'll have changed her mind and want the others back lol.

Keep offering the breast, I'm still trying but even at 5lb 8oz I think she's still too wee as she has petite features as well as being prem

There was a little girl on the ward with me who would fall asleep on the breast but she really took to the NUK tests - her mum and Dad bought the teats and bottles from boots x

In Boots? Awesome, I'll go have a look as I need more.

Thanks :flower:
