I need to write about this because I never want to forget it!!

My first birth was very long, very painful, very exhausting. Baby was back to back. Ended up with an episiotomy and ventouse delivery after baby's heartbeat dropped and she needed to come out quickly. We came within a whisker of an EMCS.

Fast forward almost two years to the day from that and I'm six days overdue with my second baby. Had a sweep at 40+5 but midwife doubted the chances of its success as I was still nowhere near ready "up there" and baby was back to back again, despite me doing everything under the sun to avoid that position this time. So I resigned myself to an induction the following week and got on with things. I dyed my hair that evening but slept so badly, I got up the next morning so early, I was in the supermarket for 8am!

After doing a big food shop, I went home and tried to doze on the couch while DD1 had her nap but I couldn't settle so I did three loads of washing, changed the beds, hoovered and cooked a casserole and a spag bol. Cleaned the house top to bottom. A few stomach cramps took my breath away throughout the day, but thought nothing of it. That evening, couldn't get comfy anywhere so lay on the floor watching TV. Started having cramps every 20 mins so decided to go to bed and read. That was 9pm. Hubby came too (to keep an eye on me!) we were both reading and every time I had a cramp I squeezed his hand and did my yoga breathing. By 9.30pm they were coming thick and fast and getting more uncomfortable so hubby insisted we rang L&D (I still didn't believe it was time just yet and really didn't want to go to hospital) they said have a bath and paracetamol and see how I felt in an hour, but don't leave it too long seeing as it was my second baby.

Bath and paracetamol didn't help so we decided it was best we headed to hospital. Hubby's mum came round to stay with DD1 (who was asleep and blissfully unaware of what was going on!!), meanwhile I was gripping our bedframe trying to breathe through the pains quietly so as not to wake her up. They were coming every three minutes by now.

Got to hospital just before midnight and I was sick... now I believed things were happening, I was also sick during first labour. Examined at 12.30am and was 4cm, wow!!! Gas and air came out at that point. Made me feel lovely and floaty! Baby still back to back so I got onto all-fours on the birth ball and felt an almighty flip as she turned into the right position which was really painful so sat back upright on the ball. Really tired at this point so, at 1am, asked midwife for diamorphine to slow contractions down so I could get some sleep. At 1.10am, I was given a shot of diamorphine, which would kick in 15 minutes later. But suddenly I felt the baby coming. I was sitting on the birth ball straining, involuntarily, like I was about to do a huge number two, and was shouting "she's coming, she's coming" but midwife said "no she's not, it just feels like this cos she's back to back, don't push yet" but by then nature had taken over and I remember making this grunting noise in the back of my throat as her head pushed down and I tried to push.

At that point, 1.13am, midwife and hubby hauled me up onto the bed and, sure enough, midwife could see my waters bulging and baby's head. She popped my waters and said there was no time for an epidural as baby was coming now (I was screaming for one at this point), at which point I panicked and stopped being able to feel my contractions. So the midwife, so calmly, told me she'd tell me when I was having a contraction and two pushes later, at 1.18am, my beautiful baby girl was born!! Before the diamorphine had even kicked in!! It was an amazing feeling, so wonderful, not painful but more such a huge relief to be pushing. Had a minor second degree tear. So thankfully, the diamorphine kicked in just in time for my two stitches. Two hours later I was back on my feet and in the shower.

After such a traumatic first birth, this was wonderful. All the midwives laughed about how fast it had been, apparently my notes read "1am: 4cm dilated, discussed pain relief, 1.18am: baby delivered"

I will always smile when I think of this birth. I definitely believe pregnancy yoga helped as I was so relaxed and didn't believe I was in labour until the very end. My baby is now a big, bouncing almost-four-month-old who is a total mummy's girl, hates napping, and loves being cuddled :)

An epic post, but didn't want to miss anything out xxx

That makes me want to enroll for a pregnancy yoga class immediately! :) Congratulations on your little one!

do it!! Honestly it was the best thing I ever did, I'm terrible with pain so was a total miracle to have a gas and air birth :-) x
