So.......My bub has arrived and I can finally tell the story, sorry it's such a long essay but there is a lot of back-story!!

This is my second baby and although we found out last time what we were having, this time we decided to stay team yellow. From the moment I saw the BFP though, I was utterly convinced it was a boy.

The pregnancy was far from straight forward from the beginning. I had clotty bleeding from 6 weeks to around 14 weeks to start with, every scan I had I expected bad news but LO hung in there. Then, as soon as they started measuring fundal height, LO was measuring 4 weeks ahead.

At 36 weeks, they sent me for a growth scan. baby was measuring in at around 7 1/2 pounds, which although on the large side they weren't really concerned about. The scan did show however, that baby was transverse. I live about 25 to minutes from the hospital and they were concerned that if I went into premature labour, the risk of cord prolapse was too much to allow me to go home so they admitted me, by the time they got round to scanning me up on the ward, baby was head down so they let me go home, with just a follow up at the midwife.

At 37 weeks I saw the midwife and she thought baby was breech so sent me back to the hospital, by the time I got there, it was head down so I got sent away again and got told that my baby had unstable lie and to call if I went into labour, otherwise to see the MW as normal.

At 38+1 when I saw her she said she expected baby to stay head down but to call AT THE VERY FIRST sign of labour so I could go in to be scanned to make sure, so............

At 38+4 I started having contractions, I was sure they weren't Braxton Hicks but they were so mild I wouldn't have bothered ringing labour ward if it hadn't been made clear to me that if I didn't my baby might be at risk. I got to hospital, baby was head down, I was only 1 cm dilated and my cervix was still thick and long so they said they'd keep me in maternity ward overnight and see if the contractions develop, then scan me in the morning to check baby's position.

At 38+5 the contractions were still pretty pathetic although they hadn't stopped, and I was still only 1cm dilated. I assumed if the scan came back fine, I'd be going home. I went for my scan, baby was head down, but measuring 7 1/2 lbs. I thought that it was a bit odd because they said the same figure at 36 weeks and I would have thought it would have been bigger nearly 3 weeks ahead. The consultant checked my notes and decided that the unstable lie was not an issue anymore, but that my baby had "static growth" and concerns about the placenta meant they'd keep me in and give me a sweep to see if they could get my labour to progress.

38+6 Sweep was done, no change whatsoever still 1cm dilated. They then said my blood pressure was quite high so they would like to induce me with a pessary due to that and the static growth. I joked that baby was so awkward, I was even more certain it was a boy - they all agreed lol!

39 weeks and pessary was inserted at 8:30 am, I was told to walk about to get things going. OH and I have probably never have walked so much in our lives, we went round and round the hospital, up and down the stairs so much that staff in other wards thought we were mad and the maternity staff joked they'd need to refit the floor after we'd left as we'd wear it out.

Despite all my efforts at walking and bouncing on the ball by 7pm I was still only getting the weak contractions I'd been getting all week and I was really starting to lose hope. Then at around 9:30 they started getting stronger. I told the ward staff and I was checked at 10pm and told I was only 1-2cm. By 11pm I was really struggling and asked if I could have some pain relief, the checked me, said there had been no change and as I wasn't in established labour all I could have is Cocodamol. I took it wholeheartedly but it didn't really help and by 12 I asked for something stronger, they said I was now 2cm but still couldn't have anything, but they did say I could have a sleeping tablet to help me get some rest. They brought that round at 1am but it had no effect whatsoever!! At 1:50 am I was in absolute agony so asked OH to fetch the nurses. They said they doubted that things had progressed much but that they'd check. I was 4 1/2 to 5 cm so they finally sent me to labour ward :happydance:

I got to labour ward at 1:55 and they asked me to do a urine sample. I was desperate for the loo but was in so much pain from contractions I just couldn't go. I was trying for 10 minutes then they said don't worry about it. OH had called my Mum and she had left immediately and was on her way.

They gave me some gas and air then said they would need to monitor me throughout due to my blood pressure, she said the machine was out of paper and would be back in a minute. While she was out of the room I suddenly felt the urge to push so asked OH to go and fetch her. She came back and said to push if I felt I needed to. Sure enough, next contraction I pushed and baby started to come out. I heard her say to OH "Oh wow, come and look at this" he came and looked and then she asked him to pull the cord for the other midwives to come in. I panicked thinking something was wrong but they all seemed happy and excited. It turns out my waters hadn't broken and my bub was born in the waters.

At 39+1 at 2:18 on 21st February 2014, my baby was born, extremely quickly, healthy and apparently extremely lucky with the inability to drown (according to old wives/sailors tales!). In all the excitement the gender was nearly forgotten but it was no surprise to me that, LO was, as expected a little boy :blue:. My Mum turned up at 2:25 :haha:

So that was that, the gender reveal, induction, quick birth, born in caul birth story of my beautiful little boy, Adam.

I only had two superficial tears and was discharged 9 hours later. 2 days on and I feel great, he is great and compared to my last birth which I felt traumatised by, this one was incredibly amazing and I still can't believe it!

Thank you for reading xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Wow that's so amazing that he was born without your water breaking! The nurse broke my water before I started pushing and I often wonder if it would have stayed intact.

Congrats on your little boy :) we were also team yellow and because he arrived so quickly we had to ask the doctor what we had :haha:

How amazing that your LO was born en caul! I've seen pictures of births like that and it's a marvelous sight and so special :flow: congratulations!! :hugs:
