Ok so I am not even pregnant yet but I have been thinking names and remembering from when we named our son and there are some names I adore that I just cannot use due to mine and OH's surname.

Our surname is Hill so alot of names are out..

for example, I LOVE the name Harry but Harry Hill would just sound absolutely ridiculous because of the comedian, I also adore flower names like Lily, Poppy and Daisy but they all sound stupid with 'Hill' after them because they sound like places!

Anyone else have this issue?

My mums maiden name was manson, she had my brother out of wedlock and was a single mum... she loved the name charlie but couldn't exactly call him
Charlie Manson.

I hate it when you can't use a name because it's already in the family and the family members insist that you can't.

I don't think Lily Hill sounds dumb in any way. It's double names like James Jameson and Carl Carlton that peeve me.

I came across a little boy called Harry Harrison once... but over the top for me lol

I love Hector but OH HATES it lol

I also love Franklin but he prob wouldnt go for that either lol

^ Franklin is a great name choice, it's my sons name ;)

I know a Frankie Frances, both together sound a bit too similar to me....

We can't use any names that end in lee, lie, ly etc as they clash with our surname, I also really like the name Finn but can't use it as when said with our surname sounds like your saying Finley.

Haha its such a cool name but it does not go with my boys names at all

small world just noticed your in the south east too!

I love Jacob but our surname is Jacobs-Kraft so it's out.
Also with such a long surname I feel we need to go for shorter names.

I really love the name Thomas but we already have one in the family so it would just get confusing :(

Just thought of another, I really love the name Maxwell/Max but I have a brother who is quite a bit younger than me called Max (currently 15) so not sure if it'd be a bit strange?....

We love the name Jessica, but my hubby's psycho ex is called Jessica, so we could never use it in a million years!

I love Georgina but I have a niece already named Georgia and my FIL is George.
I also love Jonathan but have a nephew John (who goes by J.J).
Another one is Penelope (Penny) but my DH's brother's crazy ex was Penny!

My friend had that problem when pregnant with her daughter. Her partner's surname was Walker, and she quite liked the name Meadow for her daughter, but...Meadow Walker :haha:

I loved Aurora but have some distant relative with the same name so my mum wouldn't let me have it.
Perhaps you could hyphenate the first name so it doesn't sound like a place?

I know a girl who always said she would have a little girl named Elizabeth, with the nickname Lizzie, until she met her OH whose surname is Borden. :haha:

We had a few names we couldn't use because the names were already "taken" by close friends and families children.

I absolutely love Annabelle, but my sister named her daughter Annalise. We are big in shortening/knick names in our family and two Anna's would be weird.

Also we liked Willow, but it's quite similar to our surname and sounds silly... Also Louis for a boy, too many "w" sounds!

I used to like the name Julia, and also liked it because my best friend is called Julie, but once I met OH and started TTC with him, that plan was out as his surname is Roberts. I also liked Margaret (Maggie) which was my grandma's middle name, but that's out too because it's OH's birth mum's name. Bizarrely, his father's name is Robert Roberts (though he goes by his middle name!).

There are some names that are just too long and or/sound odd with our long surname. I also have a huge family and we don't name our children the same as family members. I just never questioned that we do not do that but I understand it may get confusing. It's a shame too because I'm running out of names that I like.

We have the same issue in our family as well, and through marriage we have ended up with 3 Bob's (2 with the same middle name), 3 Terry's, 3 Mike's, 2 Robin's, 2 Dylan's, and 2 Steven's. Gets a little hectic at times. Especially since two of the Terry's are married to the two Bob's with the same middle names.
