Hi girls, I've never posted in the section but have been stalking it for a few months ever since I found out I am expecting our first baby! Due in January. :happydance: Anyway, I have been knowing that I want to have a natural birth for a while now but have stopped telling friends/family because of their lack of support! It's really discouraging. I won't be having a home birth because I am high risk as I have Lupus so am aware that I will either probably have a C-section or they will induce me.

It seems every woman I talk to about it laughs and says really annoying things like "Oh we'll see!" or "Yeah right! You'll be begging for drugs!" I know you ladies would never say things to me like that in this section :flower: I guess what I'm asking for is some advice, maybe experience. Can I do it??

I quit telling people i was going for a natural birth. My best friend is an MD/PhD, and she gave me a hard time about not wanting an epidural (a half-hour chew out of why go through the pain when you don't have to), so after that, i just didn't tell people, and then the negativity disappeared! :)

You can do it!!! I don't know much about Lupus, but I do know some women who have had some serious things working against them who were able to deliver naturally. Since you will be at the hospital, they will be monitoring you and the baby for distress, so you can think of that as a positive on your side. :) Your body is capable of doing so, so much! You will do great! :flower: I hope your baby comes early so that they don't have to induce you. Good luck.

Yes! support is here!

Unfortunately in this current world of ours, we think that all discomfort should be medicated in someway, but let me tell you something about childbirth. IT'S A NATURAL EXPERIENCE.

You know that, and I'm sure that was what you were arguing with your friend. ..But it really is, and it can be; if you are allowed to be yourself and connect with your body. Birthing your baby isn't something that you do in a cough, between picking out items to wear to dinner to celebrate. It is very physical, very personal, and all encompassing. You do it. You achieve it. You feel it. You hold your baby.

I honestly (yes, really!) didn't experience ANY pain in childbirth. I was an active participant in both my baby's births. The experience was exhilarating, fulfilling and concreted my belief in the awesome powers of women. It simply was the biggest natural HIGH that I have every experienced!!! - and for that i'd do it every day of the week!

You don't have to justify your choices, but, natural birth is totally all right, and not only that, it's fantastic! You would be hard pressed to find a normal/ natural birth where a women didn't speak highly of it, or didn't find it a life changing experience (and not just because baby is here); it is so personal to the women, it changes everything around them and fills them with confidence, and completeness. It can make you see yourself as something truly life-giving and amazing, and THAT confidence never leaves you.

Reason enough for me, without going in to the negatives and risks associated with a medicated/managed/surgical birth.

I believe you should always challenge yourself and your ideas - so I would listen to your nay-sayers, as you need to explore your confidence in your birth choice..... and I suspect it will only make you stronger and more determined to have your baby the way YOU want to

I'm another mummy that didn't feel any pain during labour and birth! :)

You can do it, it's what your body is designed for and made to do! :)

Thanks ladies, I agree with you completely! I feel more confidant in my choice and I can't wait to give birth naturally :D Thanks for all your kind words, and encouragement and support xxxxx

You CAN do it! I have had 5 babies completely natural. I too heard the "oh, we'll see...you'll be begging for drugs" but with the proper support during birth you can do it and it's very empowering!

YAY I love this post, gives me so much hope that I really CAN do it. I see it as a challenge, as something I can do which will empower me and show me how capable I truly am. Of course, for me, baby's health will always come before wanting to feel empowered but if I have a normal, spontaneous labour, I see no reason why I SHOULD need drugs to work WITH my body, and not hinder it or numb myself to the process.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE giving birth. And my love for it CAME from natural birth. After my first birth, which was a medicated hospital birth, I actually feared the pain again. But after the next one, born naturally (and then the next one as well), I couldn't wait to do it again. Honestly, it is the part of pregnancy I look forward to the most. Seriously the most incredible experiences of my life.

My last one was also a "would have been c/s" had I been in a hospital (he was born at home nearly 10lbs but with a 15.5" head!! but I "stalled" at COMPLETE for 6 hours, and I know without a doubt that they wouldn't have allowed it in a hospital, even though it was perfectly fine- just my body doing what it needed to do, taking the time to get his giant self out safely!). But people are like "Why would you want to do that again?" I think they are missing out. There is something about natural birth that you just can't ever experience anywhere else in life. Being able to listen to your body, to FEEL the changes (and that doesn't always equal pain...in many ways my epidural birth hurt worse!!)...it's just incredible.
