He had been going down fairly easy until he got sick, and then he got a little spoiled with butt patting, rocking, shushing… He's not sick anymore and I'd like to get back to putting him down and he takes it from there, instead of my tired pregnant belly hanging over his crib patting him for 20 minutes until he drifts off…

So now every nap and bedtime he looses his mind when I attempt to walk out without patting him to sleep. He screams at the top of his lungs. Only for 2-5 minutes tops, but it's killing me. I've tried staying in there without patting, playing music until he falls asleep, singing to him… he still screams unless I'm bending over patting that little toosh for as long as he wants.

Any ideas on how to make this a little less painful for everyone? It's only been about 5 days, maybe just time?!

He stops screaming after 2-5 mins and goes to sleep? I'd put some earplugs in and try to distract yourself. If he is able to put himself to sleep the screaming will be temporary and better for all in the long run.

Yes, he goes right to sleep. My husband says the same thing as you. You're probably right…. just hope this little phase passes! Thank you :)

I had the same problem after my little girl was sick a couple of weeks ago. I can't stand the crying either so I just put her down and went and took a shower so I couldn't be tempted to intervene. She was always asleep by the time I got out. It took about a week and we are now back to problem free naps and nights.

Ah sounds rough. I agree with pp's that 5 mins is probs best to ride it out - and I doubt it'd take long if you do it consistently. Commiserations - my dd currently sick, really messes their sleep up, though she's currently falling asleep anywhere and everywhere. But for going in crib at the mo she wants me to hold her hand which is fine. Glad your little fellas doing better
