Hi Everyone,

My wife is a forum member, but I have joined as TTC is obviously not a one person thing!

I would like some advice if thats ok.

My wife and I are TTC, she has been on the pill since she was 16, shes 29 now, the last 2 or 3 years shes been on Cerazette.

She came off Cerazette on 25th March and still hasnt had a period and is now worrying that there is something wrong.

I have explained that it can take up to 3 months for things to get back to normal, but I just need some positive advice to support her.

I think i am right in thinking that a period is to release the unfertilised egg in the womb/clear the womb of the "preparation" that didnt happen.

Does that mean if she doesnt have a period then there was no ovulation?

We have been doing OV tests for the last 3 weeks but nothing?????

Thanks for any help.

p.s We got some Pre-seed, hope that helps us!!!!

Hello, it's so nice to see a man here! TTC certainly is not a one-woman show!

From what I understand it's perfectly normal not to OV in the first month after going off the pill because it takes the hormones time to leave the body.

When I transitioned from the pill to another form of bc a few years ago, my first period didn't appear until a good 40 days later. It took about 3 months to return to a regular cycle after that, and everything seems to be normal now. I hope the same will be true for your wife.

There should be no cause for alarm at this point, just relax and let nature run its course, then have fun TTC!

Good luck to both of you!

Hi,

Tell her not to worry, its only been 28 days!!

I was on the pill for over 10 years too and came off back in August, it took 34 days for my first period to arrive, but i know for some it can be much longer.

You are kind of right, during her cycle, the lining of the uterus thickens to get ready for the egg, if no egg implants, the thickend lining sheds and thats what her period is.
You still have periods even if no egg was produced. Dont worry, it is very common not to ovulate some months, especially the first after coming off the pill.

I was in exactly the same boat, but i didnt start to look into things like this until January, so i had 4-5 monts of just guessing really.

You assume you ovulate on day 14 cause thats what all the web sites tell you is "normal" but after loads of negative ov tests i started charting my temps and realised i ovulated on day 20-21.

My main advice is for her to chart her temperatures, ive been doing it for the last 3 months and it really helps.

Tell her to register on fertility friend (not fertility friends) she can chart her temps and it will confirm ovulation if it happens. You can also look at other peoples charts who are in the same boat.

The only other thing is by doing this i found out i had a short luteal phase (the time from when you ovulate to your period) which is common after you've been on the pill for ages, ideally it should be over 10 days. So i'm taking 100mg of vitamin B6 a day to increase it. Just something to look out for.

Ive has just ordered some preseed too, hopefully it will help!!

Good luck to you both, i know its really stressfull but try not to get too stressed by it.

Her period will come, it just takes time.

Thanks for your replies.

1 more question if I may?

Can you have a period without ovulating prior?

Yes, you can have a period without ovulating prior. It's called an anovulatory cycle, and it is more likely after coming off the pill at first. The good news is that for most women everything straightens out within a year, and for many within 3 months.

The only way to know (at home, at least) that you've ovulated is by looking for a temperature rise. The site Fertility Friend is a charting website with a great overview of how charting works that you might want to look into. Even more reading is the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility, which has some lovely descriptions of how couples can work together in learning how a woman's fertility works.

Hope it goes well for you guys.

Hi mark! great to see a guy on here!
I would agree with engineergirl -the book 'taking charge of your fertility' is really good!
I didnt get my periods back for a couple of months after coming off the pill, it really does vary for everyone.
Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey - when I came off the pill after 10 years, it took me 7 months to get my period back - I think this is normal, but it felt like a long wait! Acupuncture might be helpful...
