hi new to site and i will start by saying i have a 8yr son and 2yr daughter and they are fab.. i am 17weeks on monday and i am high risk patient due to diabetes, saw my consultant weds and she said i am high risk for downs as my bloods came back 1:147..i am beside myself as previous pregnancies were way up in thousands and been offered amnio but scared to death of loosing baby.. i am sending myself around the twist and cant stop crying as i feel i need to know but partner keeps saying everything fine..please help?
emma

The threshold of being classed as high risk is 1:150 I believe. You're so near the top end of it.

If you equate this into a percentage chance of having a baby with Downs, it'd be 0.7%...less than 1%. That's 99.3% chance of having a baby without Downs.

My results came back 1:15. I went for an amnio and the results came back as negative for any major chromosonal abnormalities.

thanks for that alex when you break it down like that it looks a great amount better..i dont think i am going for amnio as scares me to death..but will have a detailed scan at 20weeks to check for any vast defects..lovely to hear your results came back normal

mum was 48 when she had me, she had 1:10 chance of me being downs. she didnt do the amnio and i am perfectly healthy and have my own little boy now =]

Do you know how often that test is wrong? They don't even bother with that blood test at my clinic, they can get much better results with ultrasound now.

we are 1:92 for downs at 25 it was a total shock for me but we refused the amino having a DS baby isnt ideal (if you understand what i mean no one would wish this on there baby) but having no baby is totally unthinkable for me id make the same decision today if i had to...theres no a day thats went by since i got the results at 16 weeks ive not thought about it i worry terribly but i will love him regardless and we will cope

if im lucky enough to go on and hav a 2nd child i wont take the blood tests i wish my mw had spoken to me about these tests before (maybe thats passing the buck but i was only told what the blood was for after it was taken...probably is my place to ask but hindsight is a great thing) xx

hi bump wanted
firstly can i say i respect you immensly and i only found out a week ago and have worried myself sick..how did your detailed scan go? i am going to ask tommorow at hospital if i can have early detailed scan..
emma

hi emma! hope your feeling a little better today each day that goes by you learn to deal with it a little better or maybe you just get better at pushing it to the back of your mind!

when we had our detailed scan the scanner person said he looked perfect so that put my mind at rest. not sure if it will be the same where you live but i asked if i could have my detailed scan brought forward when we 1st found out but they said the baby had to be 20 weeks for the soft markings of downs to be visbale but dont let that stop you asking because i would have been annoyed with myself if i didnt at least try.

let me know how you get on today please im thinking of you xx

Hi, my risk is 1:270 (due to nuchal of 2.8mm)

I declined amnio and have had a 16 week detailed scan, 20 week scan, and 20 week detailed heart scan, everything looks fine

Obviously the final choice is upto you, but the odds are still on your side

hi bump wanted i saw consultant yeaterday and broke down saying that it driving me insane..she got me in for detailed scan at 19weeks as that the earliest for a accurate result in wales that is..i am happy with that as it a week sooner and every second counts..also heard strong heart beat and my uterus is the correct size, as i was paranoid as i thought i hadnt grown since being preg..more positive today..how are you?
emma

hi louise where did you have your heart scan? thanks emma

Hi hun, I had it done at Birmingham women's, are you having a detailed scan and a heart scan or just a detailed scan?

I think I only had a heart scan because of the nuchal measurement as it can be an indicator of heart problems.

Hope your feeling better to day :hugs:

xx

Courage!

My first result was 1:143 - got really scared. My doctor was also a total jerk about so I went to get a second blood test and got a normal result the second time. All the scans were fine, and our daughter was born healthy.

Those odds are still very favourable, they just label it high risk because of an arbitrary cut-off point. Truth is, it is just a probability calculation, based on hormonal patterns of other people and it is not a diagnosis.

hi louise it is detailed scan and it is booked for a week weds..sooo nervous for it..
thanks again
emma

szaffi i cant believe that you had tests again and they returned normal..if you dont mind me asking what were they second time? did you leave much time in between results?
emma

I don't remember exactly, but the second time it was in around 1:370 - with a combined result of around 470. The first blood test was done at 15w0d (pretty much the first day you can do the test here) and the second one was 16w6d. (Here in Belgium they deo a nuchal measurement on w 12-14 and a "triple" blood test at 15-18 weeks and give you a combined probability based on those two, plus the age. The cut-off for high risk is 1:250.

The second doctor I went to was a pretty old professor and he told me that he's seen lots of "high risk" results, but out of those not one positive Down-case in his carrier. We didn't want to risk the amnio, as it took us a long time to get pregnant and probably would have kept the baby anyways. But I read up a lot on these "tests" and I am not at all convinced about their usefulness. It seems to me more like the probability statistics insurance companies use to calculate how long you are going to live - it takes patterns, and tries to draw conclusions as to the individual.

Also the cut-off rates are pretty high as testing is fairly cheap, while a baby with Downs is likely to cost more to social security if he or she is left to be born. That's why the doctors push for amnio and termination and give as little information to parents as possible. I'm sorry about the rant, but when I read up on the subject, I found this practice really apalling. And as a person, who has gone through a pregnancy with supposedly "high-risk" result, it can really suck out a lot of joy of the experience...

Hi and welcome!

The amnio (if you should choose to have one) is a piece of cake! I had one done in November last year and i went in, he said i might feel a small stinging as the needle went in and a bit of a weird sensation.. i felt a small prick, it didnt hurt and i never felt anything after that... nothing. It took about 10-15 mins from scanning and prepping to the end. It was totally pain free. I sat down for 20 mins after the procedure then went home. I had a bit of back ache afterwards and i was uncomfortable for the day with some aching but I was fine after a few hours.

This was my second amnio and I would not be bothered about having another one and if i get pregnant again, I will for peace of mind (i'm 38 by the way) I have never personally heard of anyone miscarrying through an amnio and I have read a lot of forums. The chances are 1% although these days our doctor told us it was even less than this (they will never guarantee you 100% success rate since "nothing" is 100%)

Good luck with everything :hugs:

i had my test 15weeks exactly and it also was the earliest day possible..thats very strange isnt it..cut off here is 1:150 and my teast was 1:147 so borderline they call me..vert very anxious for my detailed scan though..
emma

hi sammy i really want to know by the time the baby is born so i have opted for an amnio at 32weeks as the only risk is early labour and baby very safe then..so my plan is have my detailed scan at 19weeks thats a week weds and go from there, if all is ok continue till 32weeks then have amnio and if not(god forbid) then have amnio straight after detailed scan..soooo bloody nervous though hun
