NHS refused funding for our IVF...

I have contacted my PCT re our one attempt at IVF and they were so strict on what rules we would need to meet before having IVF!!

These were as follows; no children either of us from any other relasionships
Been ttc for over 2 years
BMI of 29 or lower
Age 23 to 38
And both non smokers

I know some PCT are different but when invesigating I found alot that said they wouldnt fund if one partner had children. And I know Trafford PCT are defo not funding if either dont meet the above critea!

We get one cycle funded, and even to get that cycle it seems quite unfair on some of the BMI rules.

There is a real good website which I will send you a link for this gives you the PCT info on how many cycles you get and what critea needs to be met.. It also has some format letters which help you appeal against IVF funding it may be worth just to throw a letter to the PCT off this site as its pretty much done for you and you just gotta fill in some blanks, it may be worth it to get even one funded round of IVF

Give it a go, you have nothing to lose to send them a letter.. Good Luck

This is very interesting annmc. It actually went to court? I am in that situation, I have two children from a previous relationship, but OH have none. The problem with our fertility is his low sperm count and morphology, so it seems so unfair that he has the problem, but can't get treatment because of me. I do know though that such cases never win at appeal in my area, so know it would be a waste of time, but didn't know that you could have a chance going to court. Not that it would be any help to me, at 39, I can't waste any time, each month battling would mean a reduction in success rate.

tickledpink, same dilemma and I can understand you deciding to go private. I've decided to accept the situation if only because going through ivf is enough to surround you with a feeling a unfairness, adding to it will just make it worse.

the pct in county durham say if 1 person in the couple is childless they can have ivf funded, appeal against it uve got nothing 2 lose fingers croosed x

Annmc30, thanks for confirming what my mother in law said about County Durham allowing ivf if one person is childless. Adds a bit more fuel to a friends fire!

We're 100 miles north of London and Southampton is down on the coast, almost 200 miles away. I would've thought other counties would've been first choice to deal with our referral... total mystery! Can't believe I have to wait until Wednesday to find out.

May I ask have you had to fund the ICSI yourself now?? as I'm in a simular case but my partner has a child from a past relationship which is a complete farse as we don't see him. I live in the Birmingham area which is so strict it's untrue. I've spent days reading up on other PCT all over the country the criteria varies from one extreme to the other.. I shall be going down the same and shame process after sending my first plee letter!!!

Best of luck to you though x

Sorry just read that through.. you have.. Must say I'm interested in the court side of things as I have no fear in taking mine to court as the whole thing is wrong and heartbreaking

wow that is bloody terrible. :hugs: tickedpink, do not take this lying down! If you've just turned 36 then they should have known that you were nearing the boundaries if you like. Is there no way of contacting whoever issued the letter? :(

I hope you manage to find another avenue and if not find somehow of funding it yourself :hugs:

We received the news this morning that 'unfortunately' on the info provided we are 'not eligible for funding on the NHS for assisted conception'. I'm absolutely gutted. We've gone through three years of tests, scans, ultrasounds, being injected with dyes and hubby even had an operation but it took them just 4 days to respond to our IVF referral to say no. They haven't told us why and I can't see my Doctor until Wednesday to find out. It's absolutely soul destroying and can't stop crying... I can't help wondering what possible reason they will give for refusing us

keep pestering you will get it in end i was turned down but i pestered that much im currently havin fertilty treatment at mo

OMG your post has really upset me, I cannot believe how unfair that is!
We are going for our IVF referral appt next week as have had all tests etc, been ttc for 7 years and had two mc's and an ectopic, resulting in only one damaged tube remaining - and ive stopped ovulating - despite all this, and only being 27 I'm panicking now as im 6 foot tall and my BMI is 31 - ive lost nearly 2 stone since nov and figured she'd let me off last 3 kg as been really depressed last couple of weeks, but now I reckon they'll just say no.
I cannot believe how unfair this process is - when there are heroin addicts out there popping out kids left right and centre!!!!!!!!! We shouldn't have to pay private, whether it be cos ur half a stone too heavy or a week too old!
Hugs to u :-(

Its a postcode lottery and it just pisses me off!!
We have no children, never had a BFP and been told that we get one go and we cant have it yet as the PCT doesnt have any funding!!

You know what some people dont have any children and i find that its a bent the whole system is bent!! I mean some people get IVF even if they have children and get 3 goes, we get NOTHING at the moment and dont have any children!

I have tried pestering and tried and still GOT no where! There saying there dont have any monies for new patients since October last year and there currently reviewing the whole ivf process!!

Please tell me how its fair, how its fair to give some patients 3 goes and how some get none with no kids, and how some get 1 go with kids, thats what i say about its all BENT

I'm absolutely sure they knew about the age limit and maybe I'm being very cynical here but maybe that's why they dragged things out so freakin long :growlmad: It wasnt until I went to see a different doctor about feeling so low and depressed and how it was effecting my work and social life that she actually got things moving! In 7 weeks she got all the tests done and filled out the referral. She honestly couldn't do enough. And when we went back to see her and ask why we had been refused - as they (the south central commissioning group :growlmad: ) refused to tell us in the letter. She was shocked to hear we had been refused!!!!! She phoned them up then and there while we were in the office. She was shocked even more when some 'woman' - if you can call her that - told her that we hadn't been trying long enough (3 years isn't long enough? ) and that she didn't see my DH's SC as 'severe' enough (Oligozoospermia... 2mill if we're lucky!) to justify IVF... it could still happen naturally... Is she nuts? :hissy: She told my Dr that we could apply again in October and that in no uncertain terms was she going to back down. My Dr was fuming!!!!!! So... I haven't got the time, the patience or the strength to go through an appeal. The NHS can stick their funding where the sun don't shine. And as my hubby pointed out... druggies get free needles and methadone to help them come off it... The NHs spend millions on advertising 'quit smoking' ads and hand out free quit kits... Sorry and i apologise now if i offend anyone, but those people choose to smoke and choose to do drugs... if they want to quit, good on them but don't give them hand outs. Women like us have no say over our 'condition'... OK, i'm gonna quit now before i really get started

You know, this has nothing to do with me, but that is SERIOUSLY unfair and I would appeal without a doubt!
