Hi Ladies.

I haven't posted on this forum for a looong time!

My daughter has been potty trained for over a year now, but still isn't potty trained at night. She still has a very wet nappy (pull up) in the morning and doesn't seem interested in learning just now.
Not an issue at all. I was just wondering what age other parents had potty trained at night and how you went about it.

I was thinking about keeping a potty in her room at night in case she wanted to take herself to the toilet during the night and get her to go before going to bed to start with and take it from there.

My DD was 2.5yrs when she was dry by day and within the 2 weeks it took to day time train she was done by night as well. Easy as anything.. basically trained herself and has NEVER had an accident..

DS was potty trained 1 month before his 3rd birthday and has been dry by night for 4 weeks now (he turned 5 in July). We have used a pull up by night for 18 months or so, some nights dry, some not. We have been limiting his drinking from 1 hour before bed to only 1 small cup and no bedside drink. He still frequently wakes up in the night and climbs into our bed, when he does we remind him to go to the toilet before going back to sleep. Also always make sure he at least tries to go before bed.

I was beginning to think that it was taking too long.. but my friend has taken her DD to the dr (she just turned 6 in July and still isnt dry by night) and they don't seem concerned at all at the moment and mentioned something about a hormone needing to be released and until that happens it isn't a straight forward dry by night situation.

Good luck when you decide to try it out!

Thanks for your reply. I'm definitely not going to push her. She's not aware that she's going during the night and doesn't complain about her pull up being wet in the mornings so she's not quite there yet. I think I'll start getting her to go to the toilet before bed though and keep a potty in her room at night to start off with and see how we go.

Yeah that was the same with my DS. Then all of a sudden it was "i dont want these pull ups anymore" and we were off!
Good luck :)

My daughter was still heavy wetting at night at 7yrs old so we saw specialist nurses. We didn't need hormones in the end, just an alarm that helped her body link together the feeling of needing to wee with the idea of waking up.

There are a number of things kids need to be dry at night
1) a hormone that slows urine production
2) a dark(ish) sleep environment for that hormone to be produced
3) to drink enough during the day that their bladder becomes strong
4) to drink enough during the day that they don't chug 4 glasses full at dinner time
5) to feel safe to get up and go to the toilet at night
6) to be able to quickly remove garments/open doors etc.
7) to not sleep so deeply their body wont wake when they need to wee
8) to not drink caffeine/fizzy drinks or dark juices like blackcurrant before bed
