Nintendo DS... which one?

My dd1 has mentioned a few times that she wants a DS. She used to have a 3ds ages ago that was her cousins but it disappeared ages ago. She loves the mario games as well as others.
There are so many to choose from and such a big price difference between some... What is the best one to buy for a 7yr old?

It is hard work as there is just so many of them.

We have just bought DS1 the new 2dsxl for his birthday. We picked this one because:
I don't like lots of 3D so what's the point of paying for something I'd just turn off
The lid closes unlike the old 2ds and I feel that will protect it more
Being the latest system it seems to be the most compatible with everything that's out there.

I know it's expensive but I'm not planning on replacing it in the next 5 years
