My son is 2 weeks old and I believe he is addicted to the nipples on his bottles. He eats just fine, but I have noticed when he gets tired he wants the nipple on his bottle to soothe himself. If I don't give it to him he screams and fusses until I can't take it anymore and give it to him. I feel bad in giving it to him cause I don't want to over feed him. He will suck on it for a second or two until he falls a sleep with it in his mouth. I will take it out of his mouth and then he realizes it and starts screaming again. I try and use pacifiers, but he doesn't want it and spits it out. Do any of you ladies have advice on how to break him of this habit, or is this just something I have to deal with? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

It's comfort sucking and you shouldn't give them teats as pacifers as it could cause tooth decay (even if they don't have teeth yet!)

Have you tried different dummies? Violet was very picky about which ones she'd accept to begin with but she went through a stage of having to have one to go asleep

Agree with the above...Ruby usually settles herself off to sleep with a dummy, then spits it out. Try some different dummies.

They have to learn how to keep a dummy in their mouths so you do have to kinda hold it in at first till they get used to it.

Using a dummy is preferable to a bottle for the sake of over feeding, the hassle of using a bottle (sterilising, cleaning, milk wastage) and later on, tooth decay.

What bottle brand are you using and maybe we can think of a dummy close to that shape?

Hollie is the same but she will only take cherry dummies now, it helps just try a few out im, she uses TT bottles and the teats are the breast ones and slow flow if hat helps at all? xxx

Why does it cause tooth decay??

My son was similar at first...in the end we gave him a dummy for a little while, as angelstardust said...you kind of have to hold it in there at first (he prefered the bottle teat to a dummy!). After about a week he didn't want it anymore, and now he seems fine!
