I had the fright of my life this morning - I thought my baby was weeing blood. I phoned the midwife in tears and she came round and looked at the nappy and explained that its nitrates and perfectly normal. They sometimes call it brick dust. I was so relieved! Can't believe I wasn't told this before - I was so worried. Anyone else get this with their newborn?

Yeah I think I did, I had forgotten about that. Is it like orangey crystals? Joni also had one of those pseudomenses periods, and that scared me too!

edit- I say I think I did, but I mean LO, obviously! x

we had this when my son was a few days old. Thankfully the midwife was due that morning and we kept the nappy to show her. She called it "brick dust" too due to its colour. What a fright we got when we seen it in his nappy!

One of ours started in the hospital. We called the nurse right away and she told us it wasn't blood and was normal.

Thanks ladies - it was a real shock! Think new moms should be warned about it before hand

My lo had it too. He was having treatment for jaundice at the time and under the UV light it looked bright red so I thought it was blood and had a massive fright!

Ds3 had this,I had the fright of my life as he wasn't weeing very much when he was a few days old so I was told to put cotton wool in his nappy so it would be easier to tell if he had weed. Went to change his nappy in the middle of the night and noticed it on the cotton wool,I was soo worried but thankfully the midwife called that day and told me it was normal

I recall seeing something like that too. Also, there was actually blood in my daughter's nappy a couple of times, it was her period! Yep, newborn girls get periods, it's from their mummy's hormones or something like that.
