Tom feeds two or three times a night then when i wake up, he is just lying there not crying, just waving his arms about and i snooze waiting for him to cry and he just doesnt, even upto 6-8 hours after a feed. usually i will get up and feed him out of guilt after 5 hours.

But, after this, he wont sleep all day, apart from the odd hour right before he is due a feed when i will have to wake him. Then he is awake until i go to bed (about 11) and i have no idea if he is sleeping then or not! he cries when he is hungry.

I thought newborns slept most of the time?? He is so hot, crabby and colically today.

Wow,I wonder why he doesnt cry? Mine wakes up every hour and half and screams for a feed.I am utterly exhausted and starting to suffer memory loss.My doc said his sleeping pattern will improve once he has outgrown his reflux.
Let your doctor check him out.Every baby is different.

Some babies sleep well and some dont...

My OH was like that, he slept very well right from the beginning and his mum thought something was wrong with him! lol... She even took him to the doctor! One of my friends just had a baby like this too.

If he cries when he is hungry you have nothing to worry about :D But of course there is no harm in talking to your doctor about it.

Do you take his temperature when he is hot/colicky?

It may just be his schedule- they all have their own unique sleep patterns. Sounds to me like you have a very laidback, easy baby already!!!

i take his temp regularly because of infection i his shunt. he is always 36.7 - 37.1oc

Nothing to worry about then hun :hugs:

Sounds like he is happy and has his own schedule... Lucky you! hehe... Im sure every mother would love a baby that is quiet for 5 hours!

wow. at least cou wake up and feed him anyway! Ted can do that during teh night too - doesnt really scarem for a feed just lays there and gurgles - OH had to wake me last night to tell me baby was hungry! I must train Ted to scream and wake me when he needs food! He must learn his mum is a deep sleeper. A scream I'll hear, but not soft adorable gurgles (which he tends to make so often in teh night I think I'm used to them already!!)

He does scream for food during the day but last night he went 4.5 or 5 hours before OH woke me.
Ted eats lots more during the day than at night.

I'd ask your doc about it - over 6 hours seems amazing..if a little unsettling! I hear some people say to not worry if newborns sleep through, but I also read we should not go longer than 5 hours without feeding them...who knows which one to believe?!?

My Mw said 6-8 is fine! But loads of people say no more than 4 hours, but let them do what they want at night. At the moment every day is different, but the night times seem to be the same!

my midwife said to me wake tommy every 4 hours in the day dont let him go any more but let him do what he wants at night, the longest he has gone is 5 hours during the night, he also doesnt cry really in the night he makes these bizarre screamy, groaney, pain noises but is still asleep...i think feeding every 4 hours in the day maximum builds their tummies for the night time, when maddy was old eough i used to give her porridge b4 bed and she slept through a treat as she was full, my doctor advised me to try it and ill certainly be doing it with tommy again!!

how old do they have to be before you can give them porridge?

About 5-6 months or so... Some babies are ready earlier, some later. Usually when the baby can hold their head up themselves as they then have the proper swallowing muscles. Here in Canada we have lots of cereals (hot & cold) specially designed for beginner type cereals that are easier to digest.
