No waving clapping or mimicking? Update: HE DID IT!!!

All was well. I mentioned this to the nurse and she said it was nothing to worry about, that it would be at the 18th month check. I knew she would be laid back about, she didn't even ask. For some reason they couldn't see the doctor today, she they booked us for next week for their version of the 12 month check up, so I will raise the subject up again with her. Lord Fauntleroy (the more forward twin) has gone from cruising to walking his first 5 or 6 steps, which I think is quite good for a premature twin that has just turned one. Sweetface (the one I always worry about), is still cruising, but he always does things later, lately I just get the feeling he is just 1. different to his brother 2. later in his development, but I don't think there is anything "wrong" that we will need help with. Other days I fret I think differently. But today I was observing how they do exactly the same things with toys, going for the same buttons and lights, and in that way they don't seem that different from each other. He has always been different and slower to do things though, he took longer to smile, he never used to look at us as much as his brother did, and he had bad colics. A lot of the time that his brother was learning, he was crying, and I often think this made him more behind as he just didn't spend so much time interacting with the world as he was just "upset". I also think he was the typical baby that didn't like being a baby, the moment he was able to sit up and play and stand up, he stopped being so bad tempered and he only cries at specific moments now. Before I would spend all day trying to stop him crying, it was so stressful. I'll update if the doctor says anything different, thanks all for your concern and support X

So my nephew turned 1 at the beginning of September and he's not walking yet either. He was born a few weeks early, but nothing substantial and the doctors aren't worried about him. I'm sure Sweetface will be up and walking around in no time! Good luck to you for chasing after two toddlers lol :)

I don't know a lot about twins, but is it possible when you're waving and clapping and the more forward one responds, the other is thinking, "Cool, brother's got this one. He's saying hi back to mommy for both of us."?

SpringCane, it could be that, its a bit weird what can happen with twins, they can be slower because of being a twin for sure

Hellojelo, I'm actually not worried at all about the walking thing, he seems completely normal to me there, many babies don't walk at 12 months (or 10 months and a half adjusted for him). He's cruising really well, crawling, I think he is fine in that aspect. The clapping thing does bug me more, but we will see

He's still very young, really, I'm glad you aren't feeling too worried today. I didn't see my son wave until 14 months, and none of us wave at each other anyway so I wasn't sure why that was meant to be a milestone of any sorts. Good that you realising that walking this early isn't a must, there is a huge range of normal. 10-12 months is actually considered pretty young isn't it?

It must be hard when you have twins as there must be so many comparisons made. My kids were as different as could be, when it came to ages for achieving things. The only thing they did at the same age was their first steps, both at 11 months. Sophie was quite "far behind" physically compared to Thomas, who was up and cruising at 6 months. She hadn't even rolled at 6 months, let alone all the things he had done. He was reaching for items at 6 weeks and managed to grasp them well at 9 weeks, Sophie not until 12-14 weeks. He rolled at 12 weeks, she did at 8 months. She spoke her first words at 16 months, he not until 23 months. She sat without toppling over at 5.5 months, he not until closer to 8 months. Sophie was clapping at 6 months, waving and playing peekaboo at 8 months, Thomas not till over a year old.

You can only compare sweetface to himself. Is he changing? He he doing more now than he was 10 weeks ago? His brother shouldn't be a yardstick by which to judge him, I made that mistake with my kids and spent the first 11 months worrying that Sophie was incredibly delayed and was so anxious. Then they get old enough to realise they are being compared and don't enjoy it.

Thanks minties, its all true. Lol about the waving thing, we don't really wave either. I think waving must be just one example of imitation on their part, and imitation is supposed to be their way of learning. I spend time reading about autism, global development delay, even other things... Sweetface is so like DH, he is like his little clone in his physical appearance and mannerisms, you see photos of DH when he was a baby and its hard to see the difference between them. We suspect that DH must be something like a high functioning aspergers, DH has suspected this himself before as me and my mum have. I just can't help worrying and wondering if Sweetface could be on the spectrum. I know its super early, but I would want to know as early as possible to help him. On top of everything they are going to be bilingual, which will mean more delay for sure even if in the long run its better for them. I spend weeks just sitting back and enjoying them, and then the doubts and worries come back. I've said it before, but I say it again, I think I'm just going to be one of those parents that always worry to an extent, I'll have to learn to deal with that better and distinguish between helpful worrying that can lead to problem solving, and just worrying that only harms me

Ahhhh gotcha. Well, I don't know if my nephew claps or not haha I've never seen him do it, but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. I've got nothing on that one, but I wish you luck!!

Hi Calm. Im glad everything went ok. Please try not to worry. How are night times going? Ours are still horrendous. He is 1 next week and he sleeps worse than when he was newborn. I feel ill today where im so tired. x

I feel your pain, mine also went through quite a regression but I'm sure in your case it was to do with how ill he was, if it left him with wind that can really make it worse, wind always upset my two at night even now. They are a bit better lately, crossing fingers and touching wood, its not perfect, but its better! Sleep deprivation is so so hard, I really hope it gets better for you soon :hugs:

Im so pleased they are sleeping better. Thats great. I felt so rough today I actually had an afternoon nap with him which I never do. My Mil picks my older two up from school on a friday and does their tea so I didnt have to worry about the school run today. Xx

Oh gosh, I've been doing the naps with them for ages now, especially as I managed in the last 2 months for them to have synchronised naps, its my lifeline! Really hope he settles for you X

Actually was looking further into high functioning aspergers, and its not DH. He basically has a very high HQ, an obsessive interest in computer programming and is basically a genius at it) (which is good because he is very sort out job wise), he has crap social skills and it not good with communication and emotions. If he is doing jobs, it is like in computers, he has to do the jobs in the list it is in, that is why he finds it hard being flexible. When he was a kid he used to do this flapping of hands and weird movements of body when concentrating hard, apparently his father did it, and I've seen Sweetface do it too, though not so much in the last weeks. He is progressing so well in playing with toys, doing so much more than he did a few weeks ago. His interaction with me is different from his brother, and his brother I think is more typical and text book like. But Sweetface is so full of small hugs and bites, and big smiles lately. He is certainly much more content than he was some months back. I spent ages clapping dancing waving and jumping up and down like a lunatic, he looked in interest but didn't imitate me. Then again neither did LordF, they just looked amused.

Your DH sounds just like mine (even the same job) my son has similar qualities and my daughter none of them (so far) if they were twins rather than siblings is be panicking about him she has done pretty much everything (physically) 3 months earlier than him!

Lol at the image of your twins looking at you bemused while you act a loon!

Well, I forgot to update so I'm doing it now. The doctor said that its still in the realms of what is considered normal, even said that maybe his twin is more forward, though I'm not too sure about that, I think he is quite average. He is mimicking though, just not clapping or waving. He makes noises with his mouth and hand when his brother and I do it, and he also clicks his tongue when I do it. He responds to his name (I'm surprised that they know their own name and that they don't confuse it with their twin's name, plus the fact different people call them different things depending on the language), and his playing with toys is exactly the same as his brother does, at the same stage. I think the next couple of months will give us a clearer picture so I'll update again

UPDATE! He just did it! He just clapped, again and again while we were all doing "if you are happy and you know it clap your hands". I was so happy and he saw how happy I was so he got happier and clapped more! So happy :happydance: He was already doing quite a lot of imitating but no clapping until today! He keeps looking at his hands like: Oh, what have I done? :cloud9:

Haha woohoo! Congratulations little man! Now it's clicked he'll probably do it all the time. :D
