My water broke about 3:30 am on the morning of January 4, 2012 (5 days overdue). We headed into High River to get checked out at the hospital where we had planned to have Noah delivered. I was checked, and it was confirmed that my membranes had ruptured. They sent us home as I hadn't really experienced any contractions yet (a few, but nothing consistent). They told us to come back by 3 pm so they could assess if I had dilated at all. So we came home, did some walking around trying to get the contractions going. They started to pick up in the early afternoon, but still nothing consistent. We packed up and headed back to the hospital just before 3 pm. When they checked me, I still hadn't dilated. Unfortunately High River Hospital is very small and they didn't have any back up obstetricians on call this week so they had to send us to Calgary (as there was a chance I would have to be induced). The drive from High River to Calgary is about half an hour. During the drive my contractions started to get much more intense and closer together. By the time we got to the hospital in Calgary I was in terrible pain They hooked me up to a fetal monitor and then checked me. I was 4 cm dilated! So we got wheeled to labor and delivery.
After a couple of hours my contractions just got more and more painful and much closer together. About 8 pm I was able to get an epidural. Oh my gosh, it was the best thing in the world! About 10 minutes after getting it put in, I didn't feel any pain at all!
Another hour or so passed and the doctor checked me again. Even with all the painful contractions I had been having, I was still only 4 cm dilated. So the doctor ruptured my membranes (turned out what had ruptured earlier in the morning was higher up), and once they did that the baby's heart rate dropped and they couldn't get it back up enough, so the doctor told us we would be having a C Section. Which was actually fine by me, it had been such a long and agonizing day and I was just ready to have this all over with.
So my husband took our things and went to get in scrubs, while I was wheeled into the OR and prepped for the C Section. I don't remember a lot after that as they drugged me up pretty well. I remember being told I would feel lots of pressure, and I didn't even know they had already started the procedure! The next thing I knew I heard our baby cry. It was the sweetest sound in the whole world! I know my husband went over to the baby while he got looked over by the doctors, but I can barely remember it happening. I briefly remember being given a quick glimpse of our baby before I was taken to recovery.
It was a long and stressful day, but Noah arrived safely at 9:41 pm weighing 8 pounds and 8 ounces, and is healthy (the most important thing!). We got discharged yesterday, and so far things are just amazing. He is breast feeding like a champ and is such a content little baby. We are so happy and proud!
