Normal sounds or silent reflux?

Our little guy is almost 3 weeks old now, from the time we brought him home from the hospital he has always made (scary to us) sounds during sleeping at night. They sound like gagging, coughing, grunting, slight wheezing, gurgling sounds. Usually he doesn't cry when he makes the sounds, but it scares the both of us. In between the sounds he breathes fine. The doctor said the sounds are normal, and many of our friends with kids say the same.

Our night routine is when he starts to cry or whine we change him, feed him, attempt to burp him, and have him vertical on our shoulder for about 20 minutes or so before putting him back in the bassinet.

The sounds don't start right away, last night it happened once I believe about 45 minutes after putting him into the bassinet asleep. He wasn't crying or anything, just eyes open making the sounds. Once I picked him up he pretty much stops.

Any experience with this? We're not sure if the doctor is correct or if we should push for further testing to see if it's reflux?

Thank you all very much!

All babies have reflux to a certain degree because they have immature muscles keeping the stomach contents in place. However in some babies it can cause pain, disturbed sleep, weight loss, constant sucking etc. I suppose it depends how much you think it is affecting him as to whether to seek treatment.

I personally don't remember any sounds like that, but tbh I was so tired I think I slept through anything that wasn't full blown screaming!

I'd keep an eye on it and if you feel like it may be something, mention it the doctor again/HV :hugs:

My daughter is 8 weeks old on Thursday and still makes some strange noises in her sleep!

Thanks for the advice. When he's making the sounds his eyes are open and he's looking around or staring in the dark. Doesn't look like he's in distress or anything. It's mostly us being scared and having that "6th sense" that something is going on with our son, and picking him up to soothe.
